Oh. Well I certainly do alot of blind buying (not just Criterion, but in general). But I do that based on description of the film. Sometimes I go just on reputation. I certainly have no desire to own *ALL* of the blu-rays. There's quite a few Criterion's I have no interest in ever watching, let alone owning. I can probably go so far as to say I have no interest in the majority of them, just the descriptions of something like AntiChrist repulses me. There's plenty more that completely turn me away just based off description. Besides, even if I wanted them all, I cant afford it anyway. I can't afford to just buy movies to collect them. I buy only with the expectation that I will actually enjoy the film. If I don't enjoy it, usually I'll look to resell it.

I'm with you in there's probably only 100 or so that I will ever be interested in, but like I said I'm trying my best to stick with the blu-rays at this point and avoid DVD (again - not just Criterion, but in general).

Why did they show the snippet of the ending of Diabolique in the supplements of Wages of Fear ?
It kind of ruined my experience while watching the film. At the end of the film they say not to tell ending to anyone, but some Idiot decided to show the ending in one the supplements for another film.

Any one yet to watch Diabolique DON'T watch the supplements for wages of fear

There are quite a few in the collection I have no interest in, and outright refuse to buy. supposedly I'm some sort of unintelligent, uncultured idiot for avoiding those particular films, but that's another story. I've been lucky so far with my blind buys, but I am actively trying to watch more from my wishlist (currently 27 films) before I buy. :) There's just too many films that look good. I'm glad we get these sales though, because they help a lot.

Personally, I don't buy the CC DVDs because I find that they're still too expensive, especially in comparison to the price point on the BDs. I only own one CC DVD, and I bought that used. I've wanted to buy CC films that appeal to me for years, but I could never justify the price point. I'll still buy non-CC DVDs, however, especially if they're under5 bucks.:D

I think I know what films you're talking about and I try to stay away from them as well. You're not an "uninetlligent, uncultured idiot" for avoiding those in the slightest. It just means you have standards/values that these films may infringe upon. There's nothing wrong with seeing them at least once just to know what you can/can't stomach in the sense of subject matter, and I respect those who own them and give them multiple viewings, but that's not for me, and it's also not their place to tell you you're wrong and claim they're more sophisticated when... they're not. They just want to believe they are.

Just an FYI, in the deals forum there is a post about a $5 coupon for Deep Discount:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/movie-tv-de...-facebook.html

With this coupon you can pre-order The Killing for 18.99. I know some people have had problems with DD, but the last time I pre-ordered something from them (The Buster Keaton Short Films set) it arrived 9 days before the release date.

My girlfriend just bought Antichrist and Fat Girl. We both love Criterion.

DVDBeaver of The Killing is up!!!

Wish Night Train to Munich got a Blu release... really like this movie

GilliamsBrazil 07-26-2011 05:56 PM

Been waiting to pre-order The Killing. Didn't want to pay more than $20 for it. Just used the Deep Discount $5 coupon and snagged it for $18.99!

If anyone is curious about packaging for the upcoming The Battle of Algiers blu-ray release here is what the DVD packaging looks like. I presume the blu-ray packaging won't differ too much (if at all):

Well, I have blind-bought 5 criterion movies now, having seen none of them. We'll see how well they fare. Otherwise, may end up selling some.

My collection is heavily skewed towards 2000 and newer. Trying to slowly correct that.

About 27 films in my collection have been blind buys. I'm counting films I only watched part of though, so I guess they can't count as true blind buys. But the majority of the 39 BDs I own have been blind buys.

Whoa now, don't punish those of us who are fans of the actual movies just so people who are format prejudice and didn't jump on the original releases can be happy.

Lame. So you want to punish people who wants new titles, who has owned Criterions longer, and don't care about if something is dvd or not? I was going to suggest no upgrades at all!

Also, If I had to choose between Criterion's titles or what isn't in the Collection, I would take what isn't anyday of the week. Criterion hasn't got crap on what is still unreleased.

(I should add: people can collect/buy whatever they want)

I blind buy a lot of Criterion films, but I always fully research them so I'm so so sure that is a blind buy. When researching I try to stay away from reading the plot elements and just try and get a overall feel for the mood and pace of the movie. If its a great director I enjoy like Kurosawa, Dreyer, Bergman etc I'll easily buy it with no research whatsoever. Of course they have very few titles I have not seen yet .
