I don't think "Salo" was supposed to be enjoyed, anyways.

I think it's like Haneke's "Funny Games" and sort of asking to the audience to walk out of the theater because of it's very deliberate use of vouyerism and violence.

On the other hand, with "Taxidermia", I'm not sure what the director was going for there. It comes off as some sort of novelty value that diminishes once you get used to its extreme use of violence, gore and disgusting images.

I get where you're coming from. If I could somehow unsee SALO, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I accept that the film has artistic merit and is not intended as mere exploitation, but... oy! Not a movie I feel any need to see again, much less own.

The only movie I kind of wish I hadn't watched was Irreversible, the one scene in it is beyond brutal.

Look at the two with Emma Thompson standing by the window. This is the transfer at it's worst. Blacks are blown out and foreground detail is non-existant. It only happens a handful of times throughout the movie, in total I would say no more than a few minutes look bad. There is a heavy dose of grain, but colors are terrific and detail is great.

A good comparable would be Ghostbusters. A handful of scenes lack the dynamic contrast of others and grain is ever present.

thanks man, if those shots are the worst, it can't be that bad. interesting trivia i read on this movie the other day: hopkins accepted the role of wilcox without reading the script.

You know how they play the "Paranormal Activity" commercials of the audience's reaction. I would have loved to see the faces of those in the theater when they watched "Salo". I wonder if it's like the reactions that you see on YouTube for "2 Girls 1 Cup"...hehe..

crey014 11-12-2009 11:54 PM

^Totally! Especially during the time it was released. What's the deal with these films coming from the 70's, eh? :P

Off Topic: Paranormal Activity was a snoozefest.

crey014 11-13-2009 12:32 AM

OKAY. Just saw the opening 10 minutes of in the realm of the senses out of curiousity and it's definitely something I will not watch with the folks. :o

The transfer is amazing though,

If anyone finds "In The Realm of The Senses" suitable to watch with the folks....... their parents must be indie-house-directors :D

I can't even watch this one with my wife, because she would tell me it's disgusting........ she actually told me she wanted to watch Salo' so I told her the basic "gist" of it......... and once she realized I wasn't joking.....she said she had no desire to see that!

anomynous 11-13-2009 01:42 AM

It's really a terrific, provocative movie if you can stomach all the poop-eating and torture. Kind of strange watching it in 1080p though.

Yep Salo is a good but very graphic and disturbing film in it's own unique way, this probably would get an NC-17 rating if made today, make sure the kiddies (if you have them) are asleep or not present when viewng this one! Like I've said before, other graphic and disturbing films are also availble on DVD.etc. Some examples: The "Ilsa" films starring Dyanne Thorne,Pink Flamingos,Africa Addio,Goodbye Uncle Tom,Mountain of the Cannibal God,etc.

The problem with you having Larry David as your avatar, is that every time I read one of your posts, I imagine a cranky old Jewish guy.

I'm with Beta on this one. I have no qualms about anything in life, and I can enjoy watching "Salò" in the morning as I eat breakfast just as much as I can watching my all-time favorite film, which happens to be 1961's "The Parent Trap" with Hayley Mills. I just don't see how any of "Salò" can still be found to be so shocking in today's desensitized society, unless, of course, everyone else on these boards are practicing Mormons, Quakers, or Amish. :)

It's just a film. I mean... I think we should all get together and watch John Waters' "Pink Flamingos" and follow that up with a round of GG Allin videos. At least, those all have "real" poop in them. :)

I have seen this film many times. Over 30 for sure. I see this film as a massive piece of art and I can comprehend the meaning behind the film. It is meant to shock and show a viewpoint on fascism to entice the audience to hate fascism. It is one of those films that brings an audience somewhere they don't want to go, but at the same time this was a shocking film in it's day but it seems to be more shocking to an audience today than back then. I have seen this so many times because people always hear about it and want to see it; and they know i'm the guy with all that shit. I do find it fascinating how this has got worse over time. This film could be so much more graphic though; hell footage from Vietnam is more frightening and graphic yet the same people that say this is shocking and repulsive; can turn right around and be fine with the war footage on the television everyday. I don't know where i'm really going with this rant but I just want to know why these things are so taboo to people. They are just films and should be treated as pieces of art. There not real, take a note from Wes Craven "Its Just a Movie".
