1- Ingmar Bergman would receive such a honor from Criterion a lot sooner then Fassbinder :D.
2- Kurosawa was and remains interesting to this day :p!!!

I'm not fond of the shoebox thing anyways (but of course I would prob change my tune if it was for someone I like).

twas a joke, as I'd imagine Criterion might not even be able to pull it off, but I remember an article in the New York Times where they said Fassbinder shouldve gotten an honor like that over Kurosawa and I agreed (though I know thats the minority opinion.)

I was also replaying in a way of joke. To be honest, everyone has favorites so it is hard to decide what is the best thing for the most people. I would gladly take a massive Bergman box-set. To me some of the most perfect "AK100" would be those of Almodovar and Tarkovsky thought :D.

That would just be my favorite Criterion offering ever :D

brilliant euphemism :D

It's interesting that some actors seem keen to get it all out.
The other day, one friend was telling another about a film (can't remember which) and mentioned it had Kevin Bacon in it. The other friend immediately asked, "did he get his dick out?"

As for whatever else, I hope for a solid surprise or two.

The BRD Trilogy is apparently getting a re-release sometime in the fairly near future, why not January?

A few pages back, ccfix posted a quote from criterionforum.org which was an email from Criterion saying there will be a re-release sometime in the future:

Good news! I emailed Criterion and received this reply:

Thank you for your email and question.
There will be a new release in the future of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy, but we unsure when it will be available.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!
Best,
Jon Mulvaney

There ;). Althought, from the comment, it doesn't sound like it will release in a near future nor it sounds like in many years. To be honest, this can be taken in many ways. Sounds like a 2012 release to me, just not January release. Probably in June/July/August :D. But hey, I can be wrong (Let's hope I am :p)

My guess is when World on a Wire is announced, we will get 2 new Fassbinders, along with Lili Marleen (which has been with Criterion for a while now).

So let's get those 2 announced next week shall we.

Belle de Jour (pretty much announced)
World on a Wire
Lili Marleen
Bitter Rice
Wild Strawberries upgrade
The Cranes are Flying upgrade

That sounds pretty good. First month in over a year where I'll get atleast 3.

keldons 10-09-2011 04:16 AM

wait....are there rumors about The Cranes are Flying too? have I been gone a long time?

No, just that it's a likely upgrade obviously. They did a post about it a month or 2 ago, but I know not to take those as hints. It's pretty much the only Soviet film to likely get a blu upgrade from Criterion that doesn't have anything to do with Tarkovsky. I love Ballad of a Soldier, but I can't see that getting one, and Criterion pretty much lacks in this department anyways.

Let's hope Criterion is listening to this. A month like that would probably give me a heart attack or something :p. Fassbinder, Bunuel, Bergman and Kalatozov in a single month is just too good to be true :ohnoes:.

They do pretty good Januarys (well this past one wasn't, besides the Fullers getting re-releases. I kind of forgot what else came out.). I'm prob getting my hopes up on Fassbinder getting announced, but they have had Lili Marleen for years now, and with World on a Wire being announced any month now, this would be perfect to pair the 2.

You have a sarcastic cold.

Without going into my usual rant on no Brazilian films, there are so much Soviet/Russian films they can do, without even having to go with the silent period that everyone goes to (since Kino, Flicker Alley, Milestone, on and on takes care of those).

Since they love the 60's and 70's (and who doesn't), so many can be released from that period. I would really love Marlen Khutsiyev's films like July Rain. Or the film The Red Snowball Tree. Heck, if they want to go back to someone they have already went for, they can finish Larisa Shepitko's films off.

SpiderBaby 10-09-2011 05:04 AM

And I want to talk about one Country in Japan which is one of Criterion's "strengths", maybe they can slow down on the "yakuza" gangster/noir films and get to Yoshida. I am surprised Eros plus massacre hasn't been released at all, let alone not even rumored.

I have never really understood this extreme love for silent-Russian films. I mean, there are some amazing pieces but most studios forget there is Russian cinema outside of silent and Tarkovsky (Not an issue here, I absolutely love Tarkovsky and hope Stalker will get released at some point in the near future by Kino). Let's hope Criterion releases The Cranes are Flying and/or The Ballad of a Soldier next year :).

They should release something from Hong Sang-Soo, A Tale of Cinema, or Woman is the Future of Man would be ideal
