I like the cover art for Belle du Jour. (if that is the actual cover) I may have to sell my Studio Canal BD if the Criterion has superior image quality and/or supplements.

I'd rank them

1. Blow Out

Cronenberg is for most people love him or hate him, I'm one of the few who really likes, but doesn't quite love him. He is a master at subtly providing his films with substance and relevance while at the core, the majority of his earlier work being of the body horror variety, that's what sets him apart from his fellow body horror directors to me, but I'm more into Psychological Horror than Body Horror and that's probably what keeps me from loving him, or at least his early work.

I think what I respect so much about Cronenberg (at least in The Fly and Videodrome) is the way he combines psychological horror and body horror. The ideas and implications of those films are more unsettling than the (admittedly spectacular) gore and effects.

GORIN Eclipse. awesome.

Looks like we are getting both versions:

yeah, his films do have plenty of Psychological horror, I just wish he would have focused on just those elements and get rid of the body horror (which I hate).

Traffic is the only Blu-ray upgrade in January. A bit disappointing.

stevezissou 10-14-2011 09:10 PM

No Royal Tenenbaums upgrade? Very disappointing.

SpiderBaby 10-14-2011 09:12 PM

No Wes and this = awesome.

I see where you're coming from. I don't care much for body horror either, but the hypersexual Giger-esque quality of Cronenberg's films works for me.

giannirenna 10-14-2011 09:13 PM

I just bought traffic for 6 bucks a few weeks ago, I will definitely upgrade to the criterion version though. Surprised to see Royal Tenenbaums wasn't announced with it being it's 10 year anniversary.

Especially since Traffic sucked;)

Yay! No Anderson. It was too close to Rushmore for it. A bit disappointed of the smaller announcements, but I am so buying Gojira from them:

New high-definition digital restoration (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
Audio commentary by David Kalat (A Critical History and Filmography of Toho’s Godzilla Series)
New high-definition digital restoration of Godzilla: King of the Monsters!, Terry Morse’s 1956 reworking of the original, starring Raymond Burr
Audio commentary for Godzilla: King of the Monsters! by Kalat
New interviews with actor Akira Takarada (Hideto Ogata), Godzilla performer Haruo Nakajima, and effects technicians Yoshio Irie and Eizo Kaimai
Interview with legendary Godzilla score composer Akira Ifukube
Featurette detailing Godzilla’s photographic effects
New interview with Japanese-film critic Tadao Sato
The Unluckiest Dragon, an illustrated audio essay featuring historian Greg Pflugfelder describing the tragic fate of the fishing vessel Daigo fukuryu maru, a real-life event that inspired Godzilla
Theatrical trailers
New and improved English subtitle translation
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic J. Hoberman

Way more features than the current BD.

I've been holding off on get the Universal release of TRAFFIC, in hopes of a Criterion version. I'll get it along with BELLE DE JOUR.

Darkcritic 10-14-2011 09:18 PM

So...

- Belle de Jour
- Gojira
- A Moment of Truth
- Traffic
- Eclipse Series 31: Three Popular Films by Jean-Pierre Gorin

Belle de Jour, Gojira and Gorin for me :D. To be honest, I am not crazy about Traffic. Unexpected? Yes. Exciting? Not so much :(. Have not seen A Moment of Truth and the fact it wasn't the Almodovar is really a bummer. Solid month I guess, still I was expecting something more mind-blowing.

SpiderBaby 10-14-2011 09:19 PM

I'm not one to compalin about how many was announced, but kind of surpirsed by it, due to Decembers' amount.

LOL @ the Wes Anderson hate. If you don't like his movies don't buy them no need to "hate" or celebrate Criterion is not upgrading the rest of his films.....yet :D.

That is the reason. It doesn't make a difference, they will come.

I don't hate Anderson, thanks for assuming that. I like Fantastic Mr. Fox (own it) and want Criterion to put out a Life Aquatic BD already. Seriously, you're getting Rushmore in November, another Anderson release in January is too close to that, and too much, too soon.
