I was a little confused as to how I should answer the last question about my least favourite release.
There's a number of releases that don't appeal to me for different reasons.
There's also a couple that I bought and liked, but not as much as some.
I wasn't sure if I should choose from what I bought or select one I didn't get and appealed to me the least.
In the end, I went with least appeal and selected Life During Wartime. I saw Happiness years ago and hated it, so I have no intention of seeing Life During Wartime. Still, maybe that's unfair to be voting against a film I've never seen.
I put Three Colors as my number one release and Army of Shadows as my best-blind buy. However, there's probably at least ten that I blind-bought that I absolutely love. Really tough choice.
Voting in these polls and looking at these lists of releases proves we really don't have much to complain about :D
Thanks to ShellOilJunior for taking the time!

Interesting discussion. I, myself, was tremendously impressed by Still Walking. I found it remarkably true - families are complex, people are filled with contradictions, life is tremendously difficult.

I haven't seen Nobody Knows - in part because, while I have never cried during a movie, certain things involving children, and, I admit, Asian children, affect me profoundly. A couple of years ago, I saw the Korean film A Brand New Life, about a girl who is abandoned at an orphanage. How I wanted to hug that dear child! There's another Korean film (Treeless Mountain), about two little sisters who are abandoned by their mother, that I've avoided because I fear it would leave me an emotional mess!

Asian cinema - I love it!

Getting back to Criterion - I'm sitting here debating what I should rent this Saturday. I'm thinking it'll be another Saturday double bill with Criterion.

With all this talk, it is now necessary for me to see 'Still Walking' as soon as I can...

Bergman Island is already out on blu. It is a supplement on The Seventh Seal BD.

Nice list of upgrade wants. A lot of mine are on there. But you forgot two big ones:

Le Samourai
The Cranes are Flying

I could add others I would love to see upgraded - all the Soviet films, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Naked Prey, the Teshigahara set, etc - but Le Samourai is number one for me, by a small margin over The Cranes are Flying. Of course, the problem is there are so many deserving of upgrades that eveyone's list would add up to the entire collection.

Ah yes I forgot that Bergman Island was on The Seventh Seal. The ones I listed though are only the DVDs that have been released DVD-only since Criterion started releasing Blu-rays.

You are right....missed that part.

As Roseanne Roseanna-danna would say: "Never mind"

But from your list I would pick The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Human Condition, two of my top upgrade wants that will likely be a long time in coming.

oildude 12-02-2011 06:12 PM

This has likely been discussed already and if so I missed it, but I am curious why Criterion did not release blu-rays along with DVDs for some of these DVD-only releases during the blu-ray era? I am guessing it is because they were being cautious about commiting resources to blu-ray. I have the impression they were relatively late getting into the format..... I am guessing they waited to see who came out on top of the format war, then moved into hi-def slowly at first.

Regardless of the reason, this likely means even greater delays for those DVD-only releases that were released during this period that I would like to see on blu.

It also has to do with the time frame of when Criterion acquired the rights to some of the films. The licensing rights for some of those films were negotiated before blu-ray came into the picture and Criterion, for one reason or another, didn't go back to renegotiate the rights for a blu-ray release when it came time to release it on DVD. Sometimes, Criterion sits on films for many years before they are able to get around to releasing them on disc.

I received an email stating 35% off select Criterions and other art-prints, shirts, etc.

Yeah, I got the e-mail too. Too bad it is only on the titles pictured in the e-mail and not valid on the 2 Suzuki titles.

They were quotes on several occasions - Downhill Racer, Rosselini's War Trilogy - that the original elements weren't in good enough condition to warrant a blu release. Racer has considerable print damage, so I understand their reasoning in a way.

Some would think I would say the obvious and go with one of the Godard films or Dillinger, but I will just go by those since this is all in fun and say the one that "NEEDS" an upgrade is the Sirk film most likely.

ShellOilJunior 12-02-2011 08:18 PM

Best release of 2011 voting is very interesting.

I can't wait to show you guys these poll results. :)
