The David Lean Boxset has my vote for a early best of 2012. Day 1 purchase.

As far as supplements to each their own. Some of the better supplements adds to my enjoyment of the films and in some cases are more enjoyable to watch then the features themselves. While I do agree some of the supplements can be rather boring. Plus some of us really enjoy the commentaries.

Did you verify the Criterion was 87 minutes long?. I know it says it on their site, but the correct runtime for the speed corrected version restored by the swedish institute is 104 minutes. I believe the listing of the swedish print as 87 minutes on IMDB and wiki is at 24fps. If we assume the restored version is 20 fps. we can subtract the missing frames per second -4 fps and multiply it by the 87 minute runtime. We end up with 348 extra frames. Divided by 20 frames a second that is a extra runtime of 17.4 minutes. Add that to 87 minutes and we have 104.4 minutes.

I think the Criterion runtime is just listed wrong.

Interesting. I have checked a couple of websites, but they probably just took Criterion at their word. What you said makes sense. Thanks!

Another month without a Chaplin release. :(. If only Kino had bought the rights.

Tiny Furniture is a great film...i got a chance to see it at a small theater during a limited run.

The Last Temptation of Christ will be a for sure purchase for me, when my cash flow improves...:p:o

Someone mentioned a line of missing dialogue on the Criterion DVD edition, can anyone clue me in to why the line was removed from that release? Where in the film is it supposed to be? I haven't watched it yet, but this is one of those films I remember hearing a lot about as a young man, but was really too young to "know" about it, if that makes sense. As an adult, I am a fan of Willem Dafoe and Martin Scorsese, so I am sure this one will be a great blind buy.

War Room looks good as well. I am at the age that the first presidential election I really paid attention to was Clinton's first one (although I was still too young to vote). I like documentaries quite a bit, and following politics is a bit of hobby of mine as well. I am sure it will be an interesting snapshot of the times and the inner workings of our government either way.

Also, I have to say that the David Lean box looks interesting as well. I just watched Great Expectations a few days ago and was really impressed with it. Although I own Pygmalion on DVD, I still haven't got around to watching it yet. :o That just might be my film de jour for tonight.

Regarding special features, I used to watch them in the early days of DVD, but after a while I grew tired of them and I never to rarely watch special features anymore. I was surprised to see that many of you do not either. Since Criterion are known for the having the best/most complete special features, I figured I was the odd duck when it comes to watching them. :whip: It's nice to see I am not alone when it comes to ignoring special features. :D

The Lean box makes the month without a doubt.
SO HAPPY for In Which We Serve!!! :)
(and the rest of course)

I was hoping Last Temptation had more supplements, but it will still be a great disc.

March is a very strong month and I probably will buy most of them. At least I'm definitely down for A Night to Remember, War Room, Lean/Coward and at least wish listing Letter Never Sent and Last Temptation (the latter I own the DVD).

March is already expensive with Game of Thrones.

Agreed, the doc included in The African Queen is another great one from a Huston film.

Criterion does really have some excellent supplements. My top three Criterion Supplements (off the top of my head) are:

-“Graham Greene: The Hunted Man,” an hour-long, 1968 episode of the BBC’s Omnibus series, featuring a rare interview with the novelist (The Third Man)

-Volcano: An Inquiry into the Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry (1976), filmmaker Donald Brittain’s 99-minute, Academy Award–nominated documentary, narrated by Richard Burton, examining the connections between Under the Volcano author Malcolm Lowry’s life and that of his novel’s main character (Under the Volcano)

-The Typewriter, the Rifle and the Movie Camera, Adam Simon’s 1996 documentary on director Samuel Fuller (Shock Corridor)

I haven't checked out the Night of the Hunter extras yet, but I've heard there are some awesome ones included.

There's a line missing where Keitel says "It's Mary Magdalane." You see his lips move, and the subtitles show the dialogue, but the line is dropped form the soundtrack. I can't recall exactly where in the film it is though.

Thanks for the information retablo! :)

Knowing that much about the scene, I can find the correct spot.

...hopefully! :ohnoes::p

They may have corrected it on later pressings. I know the initial pressing didn't configure right on 16x9 TVs either, and that was later fixed.

:D I'm thinking you're not the only one. Brief Encounters is just a perfect small film: "Rarely has so much been done with so little." And I'm pinching myself thinking about the other three being available on blu.

We all knew Last Temptation was going to make it to blu sooner or later, but A Night to Remember is an unexpected bonus, too. First time I saw it, I thought it was just an old movie about the Titanic, but wow....an to get to see a clean print on blu is gonna be great.

When's the buy 2, get one free sale? ...an that L/C box set is almost a hundred bucks.

That's not true--the releases that have new cover art/a simultaneous re-release of the movie on DVD have new transfers. Blu-ray upgrades that have the same art as the original DVD (e.g. Harakiri, Dazed and Confused, Fanny and Alexander) do not have new transfers.

Hey blkhrt! "In A Lonely Place" showing on TCM, RIGHT NOW! :)

Fear and Loathing had a new transfer, despite having the same cover art as the existing Criterion DVD. It may have been from the same master, but if so, Criterion did a TON of clean-up on it. There's dirt all over the DVD transfer, and virtually none to be seen on the BD transfer.

In the case of this film, I agree. Also since he has another film (Cranes) that will most likely have what you seek in features with an upgrade anyways. I love these different price points.

These are the type of Soviet films I would love to see transition to Blu-ray  Perhaps Criterion could eventually do Grigori Chukhrai's Ballad of a Soldier, and also surprise us with The Forty-first. These will be special upgrades in the library.

This is not entirely true either. For example Fanny and Alexander, Rushmore and Charade have new transfers, but no DVD re-releases (though the last one had slightly different cover art.)
