While impatiently waiting for my B&N orders to arrive I popped in Last Year at Marienbad to watch this last week. It was one of the very first Criterions I purchased on blu (when there were very few to choose from back then. I hated it then - didn't really understand it at all. I must say the second viewing was a whole different experience.(probably says as much about my growth as a movie lover as much as anything else). I sat transfixed through the whole movie - even rewinding a few times when I wasn't too sure of what was being said. It's not for everyone but I found it visually and artistically stunning on second viewing. I would highly recommend it during the B&N sale if you value storyline as much or more than non-stop action. (And I'm not knocking action movies either-you just won't find much in this movie) :)

I just watched Double Life of Veronique. The film was amazing and Irene Jacob has to be one of the most beautiful women ever put on film.

I totally agree with this "definitive" sentence. La Double Vie de Veronique is one of the sexiest movie I've ever seen. It's difficult to not fall instantly in love with Irene Jacob.
Criterion did an amazing job even with their Blu-Ray menu. The first time I loaded the blu-ray on a HD Sony TV set I had the "Videodrome" side-effects that Irene Jacob was breathing behind the glass of the screen (it's not glass these days , and well I have a videoprojector now...)

I highly recommend that you watch "Red"... Jean-Louis Trintignant is amazing in this movie.

Somehow I find that Kieslowski had a very sensual and fetishist approach in his way of filming "her" actresses (focusing on the details ... the lock of hair of Julie Delpy, sleeping beauty in "White" for instance).
Sometimes this fetishist look makes me think of what Wong Kar Wai will do a few years later...

and even as "Miss catalogue La Redoute" in Les Beaux Gosses Irene Jacob is...wahou... :o:inlove:

You can tell that Kieslowski not only loved her as an actress but as a beauty as well. His camera dwells on her in an almost lustful way. That movie is just so god damn sexy, lol.

Just ordered the Three Colors Trilogy, For All Mankind, Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter and Robinson Crusoe on Mars from B&N. That's my first order from them ($40 shipping to Hungary, ouch!), I hope everything will be going fine.

Have there been any hints? I don't recall any popping up on my Facebook feed.

Oshima's Outlaw Sixties is another title I've been really eyeing. I may manage to squeeze it in during this sale within the next week or so. I'll see. I did buy Nikkatsu Noir yesterday, though. I've developed a love for Japanese films from that era.

DarkRyder 07-15-2012 10:14 PM

I was having trouble deciding, but I ended up choosing Oshima's Outlaw Sixties and Harakiri :D

Not really, just lots of speculation. Rosemary's Baby could be a strong possibility.

ShellOilJunior 07-15-2012 11:57 PM

Predictions:

Rosemary's Baby
The Blob
Grey Gardens
Life and Death of Col Blimp
Ministry of Fear

So how's Jean Piere Melville's Leon Morin in comparison to his other films (Le Cercle Rouge, Army of Shadows, Le Samourai)? I plan to buy at the BN sale.

Just watched Videodrome and I loved it. Hard to watch at times, but never dull. He sure knows how to unnerve you.

*DrStrangelove* 07-16-2012 12:04 AM

For those who have seen the 39 steps bluray, how's the pq? I just picked it up and just saw the review on here which gave it a 3/5.
