Got 1 more to buy tonight, Early Bergman, and then I'm done. Will post after.

Here's my haul, but I'm debating a few more tonight before the sale ends...

39 Steps
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
8 1/2
The Red Shoes
Anatomy of a Murder
3 Women
Shallow Grave

Thinking about Last Days of Disco, Design for Living, Lady Vanishes, Down by Law, and Cul-De-Sac. Well, technically I'm considering anything I don't already own. :panic:

Why not?

There's really very little downside and every now and again you get something that's at least fun. The Magnificent Seven and A Fistful of Dollars were flat out great. Even something like Soderbergh's Solaris had its good points (I'm still on the fence about whether those good points carried the day or not).

And let's be honest...I like Le Cercle Rogue just fine but it's not exactly sacred ground.

[Show spoiler]The Gold Rush
Shallow Grave
3 Women
La Haine
The 39 Steps
Letter Never Sent
Vanya on 42nd Street (very much an impulse buy)
The Music Room
A Night to Remember
Late Spring
Certified Copy
Tokyo Drifter
Branded to Kill
David Lean Directs Noel Coward
Mystery Train
Down by Law

Despair and Midnight in Paris were in there too.

My final take from B&N

Eclipse Series 34: Jean Grémillon During the Occupation - DVD
Down by Law - Blu ray
Last Days of Disco - Blu ray
Eclipse Series 2:
The Documentaries of Louis Malle - DVD
Masculin féminin - DVD
Ikiru - DVD Essential Art House

Light sale for me, as I bought a bunch during B2G1, and had a bunch of preorders in:

Samurai Trilogy
M
Late Spring

I didn't bother to chance Le Havre's price drop and ordered it on Friday. It will show up mid August. One of my B2G1 titles came today, Last Year at Marienbad, Leon Morin shipped separate from it, so that should show up tomorrow, with the 50% off titles showing up at the end of the week just in time for the long weekend. I'm also expecting Night of the Hunter from Amazon.ca by the end of the week as well, that is, the Davis Grubb novel since I already own the BD. :D

I'll post mine as others are doing it ;):

- Certified Copy --- The best blind-buy of the bunch... surprised by just how much I loved it.
- Still Walking
- Harold and Maude
- Wings of Desire -- I'm sure it's shocking to say it, but I honestly didn't get much out of this film...maybe I missed something, because I was disappointed, as Paris, Texas is one of my very favorite films. Yet unlike that one, with this I failed to feel any emotional attachment at all.
- Antichrist
- Gray's Anatomy -- was really curious about trying this out, was pleasantly surprised.
- Alambrista
- Double Life of Veronique -- An upgrade from the DVD
- Solaris
- Playtime
- Sweetie
- The Secret of the Grain -- another great half-blind-buy (I'd seen roughly half of it before)
- Charade -- An upgrade from the DVD
- Crumb
- The 39 Steps -- Haven't watched yet
- Down by Law -- Haven't watched yet
- Basil Dearden Eclipse set -- I liked each film here as well, had been putting it off for too long.
- Czech new wave Eclipse -- Halfway watched. I really wish there was extra material in these sets to offer more insight into the social relevance of these films, that I wish I was more informed on.

Annnnd once again I pass on Diabolique, which is the release I pass on every single sale, whether B&N or amazon. I want it, but for some reason I always put it back on the shelf while deciding. Anyone else have that one title you want but always seem to skip?

The Red Shoes. It's always on the list but has never quite made it to the cart/counter even after the Jack Cardiff documentary bumped it up several slots.

November is another day.

Eh, you know what I mean.

Mine was Modern Times...I had it in my hand 4-5 times and ended up putting it back every time. I just didn't feel ready to go down the Chaplin road this time. Maybe in November....

The Mikado is one I keep putting off on buying. It's been on my wish list the longest I do believe out of all the titles on it.

Mine is always HOUSE
I like the weird ones...but for some "odd" reason...I always put it down!

What is the rationale behind "If I buy one Chaplin, I have to buy them all" ?

Same here. Plus, I see it at Best Buy and so always feel I can get it there if I really want it that minute.

Yeah, all of this does get to be too much. King is writing a sequel to The Shining, which I'm for since the original creator is doing it, but when it's a property out of the originators hands...I get nervous. La Cercle Rouge is already great and I see no reason to remake/redo it for American audiences, but I think we're the slight few out there who don't mind subtitles and enjoy art for arts sake.

There's little harm in re-making a 40+ year old film that many people haven't heard of anyway. The story is solid, so it'd be cool to see how it's updated. It doesn't negate that the original film exists, but I doubt most mainstream people would seek it out to watch it now. If anything, a re-make might inspire some people TO watch it, just to compare versions.

The regular Amazon price for single-disc titles isn't usually that much higher than $19.99 and they almost always have a few single-disc Criterions in the $18-$20 range.

Amazon also has somewhat regular Criterion sales with a fairly decent selection of titles at or below $20.

DeepDiscount puts them on sale a couple times a year.

B&N has two Criterion sales, two B2G1 sales and a 40% off all DVD/BD sale every year.

Criterion even has 50% flash sales once or twice a year.

Sure, I wish every Criterion was always on sale but we're not really all that far from that now.

If you're willing to wait a bit and keep your eyes open you can get pretty much any Criterion you want at a good price.

From what I heard from my local store, I think we have a good shot at another 50% sale in November.

BTW...turns out I was a good boy. All I "bought" today was renewing my membership. Unless I weaken and order something online, I made out cheaply this time around. Just Berlin Alexanderplatz, The 39 Steps, and Down By Law.

Sorry OilDude...I'm still trying to be patient, as I've got a good feeling about AE or maybe even MoC releasing those other two Mizo films from the Eclipse set. At least my wallet is happy.

PM me if you're interested in buying an opened, but like-new, copy.

Fish Tank for me. I loved the movie, I dig Fassbender a lot.. just can't bring myself to buy it for some reason. I think I've almost gone through checkout like 10 times with that thing and never seem to go through with it.

Would it help if I point out that the short films that come on the release are very good? They were definitely a highlight of this edition for me.
