I did. :D

What I love is that the Blu-ray catalog titles are about $7-$8 cheaper than their DVD counterparts (in the case of For All Mankind, the older DVD was $35.99 last time I checked).

EDIT: Amazon is being sneaky with this title now. The Blu-ray is stil $27.99, but the older 2000 Criterion DVD has dropped to $25.49, and the 2009 Criterion DVD is still at $19.99.

bah. I should have pre ordered it. I didn't move because the title didn't excite me too much but even still, would have been worth it.

I had this exact same reaction...but then I figured that if it's a Criterion, I can't really go wrong. Even if I don't like the film, I will certainly appreciate it. Think about it; in their DVD career, Criterion only mystified buyers twice (with The Rock and Armageddon), and even those films were treated with the utmost care and saw a large amount of extras.

Having said that, I think that for $27.99, I would try to see For All Mankind somehow before blind-buying the Blu-ray. After all, I believe it's only about 80 minutes in length, and almost all the features are ported from the previous Criterion DVD. It's the same deal for me with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I will get it eventually to complete my Criterion Blu-ray collection, but because Paramount is so deeply involved in the release, I won't get it until I find a new copy for $20 or less.

oh I'd absolutely buy anything they put out, it was a mix of my not being all that drawn to it to buy immediately and not realizing that was a temp price.

plus I rarely rarely pre order.

Well then it depends on how much you want the film. Unfortunately, Criterion titles rarely drop in price, even years after release, unless they are trumped by a newer, more stacked Criterion disc. Look at the five original Blu-rays, some of them are approaching the six-month mark (I believe a couple actually passed it), and Amazon has had little change in prices since they came out (a notable exception is The 400 Blows, which dropped to $21.99 and is presently stable there; this is likely due to Criterion's close relationship with the title). Most of their double-disc DVDs are still between $30-$40 dollars, just as they were eight or nine years ago. However, more and more we are seeing fluctuations in pricing regarding the forthcoming Criterion Blu-rays, which usually cost a few dollars less than their corresponding DVD editions. For instance, The Seventh Seal is now $25.49 (was $27.99), Last Year At Marienbad has been $26.99 (fluctuates between $27.99-$29.99) For All Mankind was recently $19.99 (was originally and is currently $27.99), and Repulsion got as low as $24.49 (was originally $27.99).

Now, these differences may not seem like much, but it is important for people to understand, that Amazon.com's Pre-Order Price Guarantee ensures that those who pre-order a Blu-ray (or other item) before it's release date, will receive the lowest price on that item between the date of pre-order and the date of shipping. And what's great is that it's free to pre-order and free to cancel the pre-order up until the item begins to ship (usually 2-3 days before release), which is when Amazon charges you for the product.

Of course, if money is tight some times and not others, then I could see why you would not want to pre-order for the release date, but if the object is to receive Criterion titles at the lowest possible price, then the Amazon POPG is a great way to go to save a few bucks. For example, Repulsion and For All Mankind would cost me $56.48 if I purchased both today (with free shipping), and because I pre-ordered them, the same order will cost me no more than $44.48, possibly less if the titles drop in price further than they have.

Variable 05-15-2009 05:51 AM

and now I've learned my lesson :D

the sooner I catch up on criterions the more likely I'll start preordering. my thought process was that I'd rather get a different criterion that I am more interested in, but obviously that will change with owning them all and also now that I've learned how likely the price is to change from when it's announces. I almost wish they charged me right away on preorders so I couldn't forget about the coming charge.

Beta Man 05-15-2009 06:16 AM

You guys are too much :panic:

Repulsion has been pre-ordered!!!!!! EVERY title is currently owned/on order (of course tomorrow is the 15th :ohnoes: )

I LOVE MY CRITERION ADDICTION.

I live in Japan. And ordered the Criterion Blu-Ray version of "In the Realm of the Senses" through Amazon.com. It arrived no problem, Japanese Customs have bigger fish to fry than the content of a Blu-Ray. American & Japan have the same region codes on Blu-Ray. No problem there. Also DVD Import Shops in Tokyo that sell Criterion Blu-Ray have this movie in stock. The Japanese have seen "In the Realm of the Senses" but not uncut. Japanese cinema fans have many ways to get there hands on this movie.

Me too. We need some more Japanese cinema on Blu-ray here in the states. Hopefully they'll announce a Kurosawa film as one of the next releases. :bitenails:

Just ordered my first Criterion BD: Truffaut's "Les quatre cents coups". I have no idea when I'll receive it here in Estonia. Too bad I missed the low price for "For All Mankind".

You won't be disappointed. The movie is too good to not be enjoyed.

I was late for getting to work today, so I decided to finish watching Criterion's DVD release of Nagisa Oshima's "Empire Of Passion" that I began last night but failed to finish because of my sleepiness.

I enjoyed the movie immensely and, just like "In The Realm Of The Senses," the restoration and colors were amazing, I thought. Now, I'm sorely disappointed that this one didn't get the blu-ray treatment from Criterion, yet. It's definitely on my list to get now!

I've already seen the movie and liked it very much. Thats why I ordered the BD release. I usually don't do blind buys.

They announced the August titles for Blu Ray which are

PLAYTIME! Great choice I will wear that out and for KUROSAWA Fans you will get KAGEMUSHA.

ccfixx 05-16-2009 03:15 AM

Here we go!!! Criterion's August blu-ray releases!

Playtime (1967)

Kagemusha (1980)

Here's to hoping we get a third movie this month, since we're getting two catalog titles from Criterion and not a new release, ya know? I was thinking that we'd see "The Last Days Of Disco," but it looks like it's just getting the standard DVD treatment right now.

The new standard DVD Eclipse set, Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir for August has me excited as all hell, too! :D

Does anyone agree with me in the opinion that Kurosawa was one of the greatest, if not, the greatest man to enter into the art of film?

I prefer Mizoguchi. Sansho the Bailiff on Blu Ray please!

And I'm upset that Jeanne Dielman is getting a DVD release but not a Blu Ray one!
