The latter of course ;)

In other news, got a call back from Karen M. this morning and she said the reason my first order of cases for The 400 Blows, The Third Man, and Last Year At Marienbad hadn't shipped was because they never got confirmation of the payment, but they did get it for the second order for The Last Emperor, so I forwarded her my paypal reciept for the first order and they shipped out all 4 cases in one shipment today! WOOT!

Check this out Oshima/Bowie fans, I wonder if it's real? I hope it is on blu. Someone posted it on CriterionForum but don't know where they found it.

In the meantime, I'm holding on to my dvd copy of Seven Samurai for dear life until the blu-ray is announced and I can compare the specs. I hope it's not a release like The Last Emperor where they dropped the extended edition and changed the cropping. They better keep Seven Samurai BD the 207 minute version at 1.33:1 aspect ratio!

Oh wow, I was actually kidding based on the cover art. Didn't realize till I just looked it up that it actually does have a gay theme to it. :o

Well that scene is a love not war type theme. That cover is awesome, since yesterday I was talking about them doing too much on the covers. It's nice, clean, and gets the point across. Could we have a war themed September with this and Thin Red Line? Also how did the poster find this pic? Is it something new Criterion is doing? So many questions.:D I just hope it's on blu, since we just got all those Oshima's on Eclipse, time for a blu.

Am I the only one who keeps all of my DVDs (Criterion and others) when I buy the Blu-ray....even when the Blu-ray has all of the supplements and more......

After reading that film it sounds like something I'd like. The only Oshima film I've ever seen is In the Realm of the Senses. :o

I pretty much HAVE to sell dvds when I upgrade them to Blu-ray in order to have money for food, gas, and further movie purchases :p

If you would break down to buy dvds, during the 50% sale (if it happens) I would recommend the Oshima Eclipse.

I would buy Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence if it's dvd only, but it wouldn't hurt if it was on blu, since it is the best we can get it, and why not ask for the best.

I gave to friends or sold off just about all my DVD's over the past few years. The only ones I kept are TV series that are unlikely to come to Blu anytime soon and some sports and wrastlin' boxed sets. I also like that Blu's take up less space.

Yes, I plan on buying some Eclipse sets eventually. Especially so since it's not likely those films will come out on Blu anyway. The Kurosawa and Oshima sets will probably be some of my first Eclipse buys.

It's a safe bet Eclipse won't be on blu for a long time.

1. The Last Emperor dropped the Extended Version for the Blu-ray (and the re-release DVD) because Bertolucci doesn't care about the Extended Version, and the materials for it are in rather poor condition. It's not his cut, it never was his cut, and he only let it on the original 4-disc DVD set as a curiosity.

2. The cropping on The Last Emperor is identical on all DVD and Blu-ray editions, per request of the filmmakers.

So, why again would Seven Samurai be a shorter cut and be any ratio other than 1.33:1? It's like making up BS fears is a hobby with some people....

Volume11 06-15-2010 04:11 AM

The art is pretty clean, too. But I would use this cover if I were Criterion...
