The Night of the Hunter
The Game
Hausu

and if a 5th title:

Darjeeling Limited

if that rumor is indeed correct, that should mean that 3 of the new releases will have been originally on laserdisc, one will just be a restoration of a previous dvd. maybe we'll get six titles?

I'm just going to put out my wishful thinking guess: Jour de Fête

CG, I fear that if the "New Hollywood" boxset never comes out, we just might not see you around anymore... ;)

jokes aside, I would love to see it announced as well. hopefully it will not bring with it a "need to take out a loan" price tag.

If it's not announced, it won't be a big deal. But if it isn't, then Criterion listen to me:

Try your very best to please get Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie and Out Of The Blue. If you can get those out, forget that New Hollywood set.

Easy Rider is already out anyways. But you can't even get The Last Movie on VHS anywhere anymore.

someone on amazon.com would like to sell it to you for the low low price of $250! don't worry, it's a former rental too. :p

my point. A freakin' VHS for $250 (used rental).

Oh, maybe they can put out the doc that was filmed when he was making it too for a 2-disc Blu-ray of Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie. Wow! That would be a great day to see that.

That would be awesome! Rarely do you get to see a silent film on the big screen (unless it's a silent film festival) or college event.

I was hoping to see at the TCM Film Festival but of all of us in media that applied, very few were selected to attend. But man, if you have the opportunity to watch it on the big screen, that would be fantastic!

If you don't mind to share and mind me asking, I have been wondering, what is your job in fact? Are you talking about being a reviewer to this site, or do you have another job, and does Criterion give you free movies? Sorry for asking and you don't have to respond, I was just always curious as to why you have dvd versions of new films that came out on blu too, unless you got them for free.:D

Btw...Just saw Chris Galloway's review ala Criterionforum and saw his screencaps for the new Criterion Ozu DVD set. I can understand why it's on DVD but more surprised they didn't stick it in an Eclipse Series release. Makes me wonder how the Von Sternberg will be quality wise. Granted, I'm used to the film warping from silent films but this new Ozu set, I wonder how much damage there is throughout the entire film (or both films in the set). Even Criterion's Eclipse Series Silent Ozu's look better in comparison.

But I suppose for us Ozu fans...I guess we would pick it up anyways. I'm used to purchasing silents or older films with some film damage. I guess right now is the best time to pick it up via the current sale while at $19.99.

SpiderBaby 07-15-2010 04:47 AM

Yeah, I can see why those Ozu films didn't make it, and I am prob 100% sure Ozu on blu will come sooner rather than later (sooner being a year:D).

Hey CG, I have tests done on me for scientific research. It actually pays very well!

Seriously though...I write for an entertainment website.

Before I buy Che, does anyone know why Part One is "scope" and Part Two is "flat"?

It was done to fit the style of that specific part's way of storytelling. Soderbergh goes into it a bit on one of the documentaries. Either way, both parts look incredible and I highly recommend it.

Which is a better film "Che" or "Motorcycle Diaries"? I know that "Che" looks incredible but in terms of storyline, which one is better?

That's kind of a hard comparison to make, seeing as how both films tackle different parts and aspects of Che's life. "Che" pt one switches back and forth from Che working his way up the ranks of the revolution along with scenes of him addressing the UN after the revolution was successful and shows Guevara living on such a high note of his life, whereas Pt. two focuses on his last days and feels much more personal and depicts Che's power and esteem crumble all around him. "Motorcycle Diaries" depicts a much younger Guevara and sort of shows him establishing the man he would one day become. It's not a bad film, in my opinion, but I vastly prefer "Che". If, however, you are interested in the man himself, I would say go for both.

In favor of some shameless self-promotion, here's a link to my review for "Che" http://criterionandthecaptain.blogsp...spine-496.html

Chaotic 07-15-2010 05:31 AM

Interesting. I ordered 3 today on B&N.com and one of them is scheduled to ship tomorrow while the others 8/3 (my b-day :)) kinda strange

Kevtronn 07-15-2010 05:36 AM

Tomorrow Predictions:

Hausu
Antichrist
Videodrome
"something unexpected"

As a pure film I would have to go with Motorcycle Diaries. It had an easier to digest screenplay, more likable characters, and an easier to discern theme that really came together at the end.

Che is probably the superior selection from a pure film standpoint but it is a bit obtuse and hard to get into if you don't have prior knowledge of the man and his legend (both good and bad). Even with a good idea about him and his /Cuba's history I still found myself being heavily enlightened by the commentary tracks found on part one and two that really serve as an in depth fill in to the screen action...the segments at the end of part two where he talks about Che's assassin swearing that almost as soon as he was dead he started coughing and developed asthma which Che suffered from for most of his life was eerie to say the least...

Edit- Totally shameless.
