It would be perfect for October, and that film is definitely in need of a new BD edition (the previous release was incorrectly color corrected without the assistance of director of photography Dean Cundey).

I would love a correctly color timed release for Halloween I still own the old Anchor Bay 2 Disc limited edition set that is timed correctly. The BD edition of Halloween from Anchor Bay does contain the old Criterion LD commentary track however.... It would be cool to have a really extensive release from Criterion on Blu, but something tells me that will be in Anchor Bay's hands but you never know.

If you consider the emotional factor, which for me is a huge factor than I would say "Motorcycle Diaries". Other than that, both are excellent films. I would say Motorcycle Diaries is like a prequel to Che.

Question for all you Kurosawa fanboys out there (or anyone else with an opinion on the subject). I've never seen one of his movies before (hard to believe, I know), not even Seven Samurai. I just ordered the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set due to the 50% off sale and a recommendation from a friend.

Other than Seven Samurai (which I might as well just wait for the Blu to watch), what are some of his better (best?) films? What's a good film to start with? Are Yojimbo/Sanjuro representative of all his work, or would I be better off starting with something else? If someone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated

So many great films from a legendary director.

Seven Samurai (dvd now, getting a blu-ray release this year)
Yojimbo (dvd and blu-ray)
Sanjuro (dvd and blu-ray)
Kagemusha (dvd and blu-ray)
Ran (out of print Criterion dvd and Studio Canal blu-ray)
Rashomon
High and Low
The Hidden Fortress
Throne of Blood
Ikiru
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well
Red Beard
Drunken Angel

If you want to know which ones are the most representative of his work, I'd say Seven Samurai, Ran, and Rashomon for the samurai flicks, and for his contemporary films, I'd say High and Low, Stray Dog, and Drunken Angel. But really, all of his films are nothing short of great in my book, so it's not like you can really go wrong. Yojimbo, however, is a great starting point. It's short, sweet, and to the point and easily the most accessible film in his career. It spawned several remakes, including the Man with No Name trilogy of westerns from Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly)

Honestly, all of his samurai films are kind of similar. Seven Samurai and Kagemusha being my favorites, with RAN a close second. For his non-samurai films, Ikiru is maybe his greatest achievement, as well as Red Beard and High & Low.

That is why I definitely recommend the Eclipse series, especially the upcoming "The First Films of Akira Kurosawa". Also, there are a few other non-samurai films from Criterion but only on DVD. I would imagine some of these Criterion Collection titles would go on Blu-ray, hopefully in the near future.

It always depends what you are into. "Revanche" is a great film. "Gomorrah" may not be for everyone as with "The Man Who Fell to Earth" but it all comes down to what kind of films you are interested in. Do your research and make your returns if you feel in your gut these films are not for you.

Thanks everyone for your opinion on both films. I've not seen both but I definitely will give "Motorcycle Diaries" a chance.

I have read people saying they had problems playing Criterion DVD's (older ones) on their player. I've never had this problem before but perhaps your Sony player's laser lens needs some cleaning?

Question 1: How long does it take for B&N to ship my films? Ordered two days ago, still no shipping.

Question 2: Will the Breathless and Seven Samurai-releases be as amazing on Blu as they are on DVD. With the booklet, two- and three-disk and paper digipack?

Pyoko 07-15-2010 03:14 PM

I've only ordered from them once before but they were really slow. Ordered M back in May, and despite being in stock it took three full days from the order confirmation to the shipping notice.

Personally, they have been very fast for me. In fact, what I ordered on Monday is coming in today. The one I ordered yesterday should be hear on Saturday or maybe even Monday.

But as mentioned in a previous post, I look at the titles and if one is to ship in 1-2 weeks, I'm not going to do it. Only if it's available within 24 hours because I don't need one title delaying my shipment. Especially if there is a pre-order on there (which is the reason why I didn't order "Black Narcissus" or "The Red Shoes"). I notice a lot of the newer Blu-ray titles had shipping 1-2 weeks.

As for "Breathless", I don't know. That booklet was nice on the DVD pack but I haven't seen a booklet that big from a Criterion release yet. So, far I noticed that MoC would get special sized Blu-ray cases like in "Une femme mariée". That book was huge. So, I guess we will find out because I'm sure many people want to know the same thng.

Now people can scrutinize cover-art possibilities for the next couple of weeks.

Can't wait for some screen-caps from Hausu!

You do know it's possible to put all of the images into a single post, reallyagi, right?

the artwork for House is amazing.
could be my favorite bd art yet.

Beta Man 07-15-2010 03:35 PM

Let the stones be cast...... but I look forward to Darjeeling..... it was a vibrantly colored film, and I think it was down-right-funny as hell..... I'd certainly double dip my DVD on this one.....

Most exciting film of the announcement (for me) certainly belongs to Hausu though.
