Well generally, Yes. If people that are trained in films and the making of a film say that a film is great, or better yet, has merit, that does mean it is quality. Are you going to believe a butcher that tells you his meat is quality, or some kid at the grocery store that says "its stamped quality, sir" Opinions from non-experts are just people that want to hear or see themselves speak. But opinions from people that are experts in the field they comment or work in, should carry meaning. If they define it as a quality film, then it is quality, not trash. You may not like the film, but be prepared to say, Why? He used a word that was not correct for his "review" If you want to attempt to be professional, then use the correct terms. Simple enough.

Depends on the award. I find the Palme d'Or to be a pretty good measure of quality. Now, The Oscars are a whole different animal entirely.

Not a problem, my man.

I have been procrastinating doing it to the point that I think I'll just live with my digibook versions, hah. I rarely, if ever, take my cases off the shelf, so I'm not horribly worried about them getting over-worn. Good luck!

Palm D'Or is as useless as all other awards. The Class winning unanimously in 2008? Give me a break.

Saying something is "quality" is completely subjective. For the record, I think Paris, Texas is great. lDlisturb3d thinks it is mostly trash. Listing the amount of awards its won or citing an "expert" is going to do nothing to change his opinion. It is not a "quality" film for him, and the fact that it won a Palm D'Or won't change that, sorry. Listening to "experts" and taking their word for what is good and what isn't with something as subjective as film is flat out stupid and lazy.

Sorry to hijack this thread but seriously;

"America Lost and Found: The BBS Story" is going to be my first day 1 blu ray purchase.

Having Criterion blu's of "Easy Rider" and "Five Easy Pieces" is pretty much worth the price tag alone.

Oh boy oh boy damn it all to hell, it's on its way; Nov 23!!!

Ya, there are plenty of crap calls for Best Picture. I still cannot believe The Hurt Locker won Best Picture this year. It was a decent movie but nowhere remotely close to the best film of the year. Not in my top 20.

Score...

Picked up For All Mankind, M, Paths of Glory and Seven Samurai for $60.46 OTD at the Brandon's B&N!

The manager was super cool with the $5 coupon(s) (Also, able to get 10%, too for being a member) and tried to help me find Thin Red Line at other B&N stores around Tampa, but no luck! Already have TRL ordered online, though!

I'd agree but that's just picking one badly overrated film over another. It really shouldn't have been either but I think the Academy went with The Hurt Locker by default to deny Avatar.

sweet review thx,

I ordered this movie for the B&N sale...

So, I'm not sure if anyone has checked with the ebay seller 91pilot recently, who is notorious for having cheap Criterion movies, but seems like his resources aren't as good as they once were.

He's selling discs only now. Just found that interesting.

I'm not sure based on the nominees which one I would have said was best, based on which I loved most I probably would have said Up

The Hurt Locker
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
Inglourious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

JediFonger 11-09-2010 03:23 AM

just came back from The Social Network, do you think Fincher wants this as part of Criterion collection just like his benjamin button?

Sukuri 11-09-2010 03:25 AM

on the subject of Wim Wenders, I too find his movie while potentially thought provoking, soooooooooo friiiiiiiiiiigin sloooooooooooooow

I thought Paris,Texas was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I thought the acting was great, and the pace of the story was excellent.
Certainly, lDlisturb3d is entitled to his opinion, but why say most of the movie was "trash"? Did he not know how to explain his point of view without being so vague?

Sorry I'm so late, finally saw the newsletter hint today. If this is, in fact, Blow Out...I'm gonna go nuts. I'm a huge De Palma fan, and this film (along with Body Double) is one of my favorites. Great stuff.

Yeah, I would have voted for Inglourious Basterds myself... but I really enjoyed The Hurt Locker so didn't mind it winning. Keeping in mind I haven't seen all of those (though A Serious Man and Up in the Air are high on my to-see list), I'd rank them (of the nominations) something like: Inglourious, District 9, and The Hurt Locker as 1-2-3 of my picks. Though the gap between District and Hurt Locker is slim. Up was good, but didn't really have the re-play value I was expecting.

Trekkie313 11-09-2010 05:20 AM

TRON would make an good addition to the Criterion Collection.
