To order the cases, simply make a payment to the email address store@criterion.com through PayPal, providing your mailing address and item(s) needed in the message field, and we'll send out the materials!

Although specific announcements come in chunks in the middle of the month, less specific information comes from various sources on a regular basis. I promised myself that I wouldn't double dip. Then I bought The Third Man again, now I've got Ran lined up in my sights for May.
*sigh* what is a promise if it can't be broken.

Oh, and I have a non-Criterion edition of Bottle Rocket on DVD, so does that count as double dipping? hmmm...

I am hoping they decide to take the plunge and start at least releasing all new movies on blu. They just announced The Friends of Eddie Coyle on DVD. Criterion discs aren't cheap and I can't justify paying those kind of prices for DVDs at this point. They also have a bunch of catalouge titles that I'm going to wait out to see if they give them the blu treatment.

It's smart marketing. If the release a title now on DVD that you really want, chances are you'll buy it now. If you really enjoy the title, odds are good that a few years down the road, when it gets the blu-ray treatment (which, oddly enough, is the same treatment they give their DVDs) you'll buy it again. Frustating for us collectors, probably not noticed by "Joe Public". Heck, I bet if you ask 10 random people on the street what the Criterion Collection is, you'd be hard-pressed to find 1 who knows.

Aside from The Third Man, The 400 Blows and The Wages of Fear are two films that are absolutely essential for every serious film library.

There's a guy over in The "RAN" thread that annouced that "Finally a film that matters" is being released (in reference to Ran).

I don't see the sense in buying the entire Criterion Collection (whether on DVD or Blu) unles you like all the movies (no very likely but I'm sure there's someone). That said, eventually I'll pick up The Third Man and probably Ran. I plan to rent Wages of Fear, 400 Blows and possibly In the Realm of Senses as I have not seen them yet but have heard good things.

Maybe I'm just compensating for my inability to get those hard-to-find baseball cards when I was a kid... who knows....

Some people collect NASCAR plates, I collect Criterion Collection Films....

Well, while I am pleased to see Ran arriving on Blu-ray, I would have loved it if they would have replaced it with a Fellini, Renoir, Tarkovsky, De Sica or Bergman film. I do understand, however, why at this point they opted for films such as Bottle Rocket, The Man Who Fell To Earth, and Ran.

So far I have them all except Bottle Rocket and am very happy with them. I am planning to buy the majority of the releases they put out on Blu but will likely have to scale back on them with some worries on my job and also no way to get these for reasonable prices in Canada any more. The Canadian MSRP's on the upcoming Criterion releases are insane and the Cdn. Dollar tanking has made buying from the US not a deal any more.

Personally my ranking so far of the ones I have is (from most favorite down):

I think it's a great movie, but the first half or so is mostly "Shaky Camera" work, so if that bothers you, it's something to consider.... also, it's not an "action" movie despite what the description may lead you to believe.....

Again, it's a great movie though :shrug:

- Third Man is a mandatory rent-immediately; a "Usual Suspects"-style B/W-noir that, at the risk of SPOILERS, may or may not star a young Kane-era Orson Welles;
- Last Emperor is an eye-wowing 3-hr. everything-into-the-pot Oscar Best Picture epic about, well, the last 20th-century Emperor of China and why he turned out to be the Last;
- Ran is Akira Kurosawa's attempt to do his "Seven Samurai" epics in gorgeous Technicolor, retelling "King Lear" in the process.

Tried renting "Man Who Fell to Earth", and Criterion's disk PQ looks good, but found it too painfully Buck Henry post-"Graduate" 70's-counter-cultural corny for its reputation :cringe: )

It's upsetting to see that Criterion is opting to leave off one of the special features that is on the standard DVD of "Ran" for the upcoming blu-ray. If anyone learns of any insight as to why this is, I'd love to hear.

Well they only have rights for selling these in certain subsets of the world. I believe that is the reason for the lock.

Again, Qatsi Trilogy's a bit questionable, though: :confused:

I know MGM may have lost its Golan/Globus license in PowaQ's case, and ownership might have expired for KQ, but isn't Criterion out of the business of "borrowing" Other Studios' titles?
(And pretty much reduced to its own Janus and Rialto catalogues, and restored public domain like "Things to Come"?)

I have THE THIRD MAN already. Havn't gone through it completely yet, but from what I saw and heard was fantastic.

I think I may pick up THE 400 BLOWS and WAGES OF FEAR. The former is just Film 101 for me. Any serious film lover has to see that movie. And the latter has been one film that I can never get my hands on, but the plot alone makes it sound so exciting that it could be my second blind buy after BARAKA.

Most of the others are rentals for me (that is if I can actually find them to borrow or rent).

I wouldn't get Fat Girl even if it was free. Let alone on Blu-ray.

And I would rather buy The Day the Earth Stood Still than The Blob. But that's just me. ;)

I also intend to own all of them -- and so far I do, with the exception of The Last Emperor and Bottle Rocket, two titles I didn't feel too eager about to begin with. I'll get them in the coming months.

On the other hand everything that is coming up is a must-own for me, and the quality that Criterion has accorded to their Blu-ray lineup is exceptional. Their releases are fulfilling all my hopes, and often going above them.

Great to see this stickied, and nicely laid out! One question, though, Beta-man -- what's with the random capitalization of words in the titles?

Studios don't feel like that today. Especially not even for Blu-ray.
Criterion can't go begging from studio door to studio door for "table scraps" anymore, now that studios know how valuable their own market is, Disney(/Miramax) and MGM are going to hold on to what they have, and Critey is left to their own Janus & Rialto bootstraps.
Neither of which involve the Qatsi's, AFAIK, but again, that's going on information from a few years ago.
