It's basically saying that Criterion has been working on a clear custom blu-ray plastic case that they will use on some future Criterion blu-ray releases later in the year instead of the current cardboard packaging.

CC

Good because that cardboard just plain sucks! In fact they should just go with the blu plastic cases. I am glad to see some of our custom cover guys stepping up to the plate and getting these out there so we can use normal cases on them.

Anyone know if the 2 Disc Blu of Ben Button is going to be released by Criterion? I pre-ordered my copy off of Criterion's website the other day, but I'm pretty sure they only had the single disc. I just checked on amazon.com and it looks like it's going to be a Paramount release.
Any info?

the 2 disc blu and dvd are both going to be criterion.

the 1 disc will only be available on dvd and will not be a criterion (at least i didn't think so...i've never heard of criterion releasing multiple versions of a movie before)

So the blu-ray will have some french in audio and subtitles, what Criterion never put usually ...
So maybe we can hope for a region free title ?

Just got my Wages of Fear Blu today and it comes in a clear plastic case. Much better than the earlier packaging I think.

How did you already get wages of fear? Let's see some pictures of the casing.

mattconroy 03-31-2009 03:23 PM

Got mine directly from Criterion. Here are some pics. I nearly ripped off the cellophane but figured you would want to see how they call it out as a Blu-ray disc...

Thanks so much for the pics! Nice case!!!

Lovin IT!

This film is such a great thriller to watch on a hot summer nite!

Question though.. is the Blu Ray Sticker on the actual case of the plastic wrap?

(Edit: Nope, got the Truffauts today.)

Single disc Blu, or double disc DVD

o my bad you're right...

for the criterion edition: 1 disc BLU-RAY, 2 disc DVD

for the non criterion edition: 1 disc DVD (probably pretty bare bones)

Hope mine shows up within the next couple days. I just pre-ordered yesterday with the extra 10% off deal they had. usually shippings only 1 or 2 days from Criterion.com...:ohnoes:

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking too. Though I wonder why they annouced a 2 disc Blu-ray version when they first annouce the release info for the film.

Is this a standard size blu-ray case, like the same size as the blue ones?

robertthunder 03-31-2009 09:34 PM

This looks like anyother regular sized CC case. If it's bigger than the regular Blu cases I'm going to be pissed!!!

I don't like the case at all. I quite liked the slip cases, and this just looks like anyother CC release. Nothing new... I'm not impressed.

Seretur 03-31-2009 09:55 PM

Having just received 400 Blows in a damaged case from Amazon -- and living far enough away to make returns unfeasible -- I'm beginning to like the idea of them using clear, non-blue but Blu-ray sized, plastic cases.

I haven't had a cardboard case come damaged yet, but now I realize just how fragile these things are. Plastic does guarantee longer shelf life for what are, in theory, ultimate home-library editions of these titles.

So, good to hear about Wages.

When I think of all the great titles in the Criterion catalog that could get a Blu-Ray release, well it's pretty overwhelming. Just thinking of the Godard, Truffaut and Kurosawa titles alone is pretty sizeable.:ohnoes:

anomynous 03-31-2009 11:21 PM

Hopefully all the previously released Criterion blus are produced in the new style cases from now on

EDIT: Just sent an email inquiring about this

Seretur 04-01-2009 12:06 AM

Well, at least we'll be getting Guillermo del Toro's Cronos "this fall". :)

When did you order this from Criterion? Was it just recently, since the pre-order function went back up - or had you got your order in before they took the pre-orders down previously?

I'm super excited to get The Wages of Fear myself, so I just placed an order with Criterion. I'm hoping mine will ship early too.

I ordered prior to them taking it down.

Not sure how long it has been this well priced but as of today 4/1 on amazon.com 400 Blows is priced at 21.99. You can also follow the link on this site for the amazon.com link if you search 400 blows.

Really good price and a really great disc.

Seretur 04-01-2009 07:29 PM

That's what I paid for mine, and I preordered it way back when. A vestige of the initial lower pricing on the Criterion site, I'd guess.

So, nobody here excited about Guillermo del Toro on Criterion?

It's not an April's Fools, it was hinted at in yesterday's newsletter.

Mr. Stutter 04-01-2009 07:34 PM

I am definitely looking forward to Del Toro's debut on Criterion. Seems like a great combination. And since he's a film geek, the extras should be something to write home about.

Bill Hunt says Ran has been cancelled):

headphoneboy 04-01-2009 10:52 PM

I saw copies of The 400 Blows and The Last Emperor on Criterion DVD today at my local Target store. I was very surprised to see any Criterion products at a Target store, but maybe it's a new effort to go more mainstream, which will certainly happen with their release of Benjamin Button in about a month's time.

Maybe Target has been carrying these for some time, but its news to me.

Variable 04-01-2009 10:54 PM

I wonder if they'll rerelease the current blu releases with the new case. I don't really care but... well I guess I do.

I'm pretty excited for Del toro. Really like his movies, though I've only seen the more "mainstream" ones (hellboy 1 & 2, pan's labyrinth). I'd like to seen Criterion release "The Orphanage" on Blu, simply because I can't find it. :D

It seems that certain Criterion movies seem to be more "mainstream" then others. Last Emperor seems to be fairly common at most stores.

That is very interesting.. Only Criterion I ever spotted in a Target has been Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... What part of the country are you in. Midwest MN here... I wonder they may have them in bigger citied areas possibly.

That is cool though. How much were they charging? 34.99?

Same thickness too? Those pics make the case seem like it's a tad thicker than the regular BD cases.

PowellPressburger 04-02-2009 01:39 PM

i don't mind if the case is a little thicker... I would hope they would eventually let you repace the older version cases with new ones.. I realize it costs money I would pay for the new insert and case and just put the booklet and disc in the new version case.

Yes, it is a wee bit thicker - about the same as the standard UK Blu cases.

Thicker we can handle....its all about the height!

Thanks. Sounds like it's close to the PS3 game cases.
