I haven't tried it yet, can't seem to bring myself to do it. I haven't even turned anything on downstairs since I sold the speakers. Hopefully the new center will arrive at the end of the week, I've got a pretty busy week so I'm not sure I'll get around to trying 4.1.

I'm sure it's not bad, I just didn't have the time I normally do on weekends. My daughters birthday party was on Sun and the wife had the weekend off. Which means she came up with all kinds of stuff for me to being doing that didn't involve anything HT related.

For example, when listening to the Focus 220s playing MP3s you could make out the brittleness of the highs, but on the Klipsch speakers they would also give you that, but because they are bright speakers they accentuate that sound, making it worse. Anyways, thats how I hear it!

Hello Callas.

Wow, I just read your reply or observation regarding my take on Sean's Dynaudio Sapphires. So I take it that you've heard all of the Klipsch Reference speakers and therefore deemed them all to be flawed?! Is it safe to assume that you've also listened to all of the Dynaudio, Focal, Revel, Totem and Wilson, etc, products..... and you find that none of them are flawed at all?

Callas, you are entitled to your opinion regarding Klipsch products. I will agree, they are not for everyone. But to blanket the Reference product with the term "flawed" could be taken as an insult. I don't think you were trying to purposely insult, but your wording could easily be considered as such.

Like Rich pointed out, there are numerous factors that contribute to a speaker's overall performance. There's a good chance that Sean isn't getting the best response or overall performance due to the fact that he has a queen size mattress set directly in the front sound stage.

To Sean: I apologize for the thread-jack. I just felt a need to respond to Callas' statement. BTW, I'm quite sure that even though a mattress set is in your front sound stage, the performance of the Sapphires are incredible. I hope I did not offend. If I did, I didn't mean to.

It was not meant to be an insult. Yes, I have heard the Klipsch Reference line, one smaller center channel, 2 towers and a bookshelf, there is a B&W dealer nearby that stocks the Klipsch reference line. They are a decent speakers, they do have some flaws. However, every speaker made has its compromises/flaws. My Excites have flaws, so does Seans Sapphires. Seans room, that is the biggest flaw of them all. They will never perform to their full capability in that room, he knows it, we all know it. Our speakers performance is also compromised by our equipment and connections, rooms/room treatments, etc.

Yes, In fact I have heard Wilsons, Totems, Amphions, Dyns, Dalis, B&Ws, Viennas, Focals, Monitor Audios, Klipsch, Paradigms, Kefs, ML, Def Tech, Energy, Sony, Polk, Canton, Areial, T+A, Sonics, PMC, PSB..... and more. Not any one of them was perfect.

However, it wasn't meant to upset you or Sean or anyone else. You own klipsch, you should know what flaws they have. I don't mean sonics either. I don't like to judge a speaker on its sonics, everyone likes something different, and Im fine with that. I wouldn't tell someone not to like Klipsch, or Polk or Dynaudio or Paradigm or PMC. Get what works best for you and your situation. I don't get pissed when someone says that my X16s lack a little in the bass compared to Paradigm Studio 20s. I know they do, the CM5s have a little more bass also. But I get smoother highs and better mid-range detail and depth then those, I get a broader soundstage then the Studio 20s and better seperation of instruments then the CM5s. So I sacrifice a little in the bottom to get better things in the mids and highs. Im OK with that. That is what I wanted.

Im not trying to start a fight or instigate an arguement. I was simply saying that your speakers accentuate the highs, so when you hear a recording that isn't perfect and it shows up in the upper resigters, the recording sounds worse, because your highs are pushed by the horn design. Dynaudios on the other had are much more neutral, they still resolve the same flaw in the recording, it just isn't accentuated the same way.

What I was saying to Sean, is don't think that the Focus and Excites aren't resolving of flawed recordings. Sean has only heard the Sapphires and Contour 3.4s that he has owned. He has no experience with the other lines of speakers that Dynaudio makes.

Friends?

Hello Callas.

Friends? Of course! Everything you've said is acknowledged and agreed upon. Being a Klipsch Reference product owner and having listened to several products from the previously mentioned manufacturers has led me to a similar conclusion. They all have their compromises. But I do take into account the listening environment and type of music being played when I've listened as I'm sure you do also.

This by no means is meant to be a pissing match or an argument. BTW, I wasn't insulted. I just think that the wording was bordering on territorial, if you know what I mean.;) I'm a Klipsch fan and I will defend if it's warranted!:p

And Ill add that I have never lived with the Klipsch Reference line like you have, or any klipsch product. I have heard them on several occasions. However sonically speaking they are not my cup-o-tea. So I don't have the long experience with them that you have. And I see that you have them mated to a Marantz, which, IMO along with NAD or Integra is a good pairing for them, they are warmer more musical receiver with good power, and so they would tame the highs a little, unlike say a Pioneer receiver.

When talking about neutral v dark v warm v bright sounding speakers, we can only discuss it based on the speakers we have heard in our lifetime and also based on our preferences toward sound. I am more sensitive to highs then say Hamp or JasonR tends to be. So what I find neutral they may say is laidback or dark sounding, who knows.

yeah, I figured that I would hear something back, but after a few days, I was like... well nevermind then, perhaps he/you understood my point and wasn't offended or felt the need to respond.

I will say, living with the klipsch reference product can be challenging. And it's because it's such a temperamental speaker. So much is dependent on environment, equipment used and recording. But what really floors me, (especially when I think I'm close to considering replacing them with another manufacturer), is when I buy a new CD and its an excellent recording, I put it in my 640C CD player and the sound is so dynamic and clear, I fall in love with the speaker again. And Lord knows, I do not have the perfect environment for the best sound and performance they can produce. Acoustic treatments are sorely needed! But, in the right circumstances, they sound phenomenal! At least to me they do.

Case and point. A couple of years back, I brought home a pair of Paradigm Studio V60's. I thought, an equivalent speaker to the Klipsch RF35's. Played some tracks I was very familiar with. They sounded great, but when I unhooked them and connected the RF35's, and played the same tracks, at the same volume level, the Klispch's just sounded clearer, more precise and more definitive. I heard more at the volume level (-20dB), then I did with the V60's. Now maybe my hearing is flawed, or it could be I lack the wherewithal to recognized the proper speaker response, or I could just be spoiled with the the accentuated clarity I perceive out of the horns,... who knows?!

What I do know is that my next speaker will be the RF63's! I can't help myself.:o

By the way, Callas, I admire the conversation and your perspective.

It's almost mine, the payment will be in his hands before noon tomorrow. It probably won't ship until Monday and will probably take four days to get to me.

I missed out on a pair of S2's this morning, damn they went fast. I'll have to be quicker next time, hopefully another pair will come up soon or I'll have to buy a new pair. I'll be using my Studio 20's as mains in the mean time, my new receiver will be here on Tues. as well. Can't wait to try out ARC, I have to remember to pickup a Keyspan adapter this weekend. When are you going to visit your dealer about the Integra?

Hey bud, today we decided to talk, but it didn't last long. She has a dentist appointment on Monday, I really want to know what happens there before I really think about what I will purchase. As much as I want to run out and buy a receiver, Im trying to show some restraint Id love to go there this Saturday. Ill have to talk with my wife again in the morning.

I looked at that C3 and it looks really nice, the pic seems to show a mint center channel.

Sucks you missed on the S2s, Im sure something will come up soon tho.

Im trying to find a couch at the moment. we saw it at costco and now they don't have it and we cannot remember the name of it... sucks, it was the perfect couch for the living room. It was like $895, brown, sectional and had a leg on one side.

I put a wanted add on Canuck Audio Mart today for some S2's and just got an email from somebody who has a pair to sell. The only problem is, he's in Italy! I can't imagine what that would cost to ship to Canada. You'll have a good idea after the dentist does an exam on your wife, maybe next weekend you'll have your new receiver.

That's something that I have to address soon too, my seating is terrible in the basement. I only have seating for two people right now, a couple of leather Ikea chairs with ottomans. I'd like to get something like what your thinking of, maybe after I pay off the property taxes for the year.

The one problem I may have with a couch like that is fitting it down the stairs, I may have to go with a regular couch or some HT style seating.
