Bruce's discussion thread...

Zach and Miri Make a Porno (2008). Did it's name hurt it's take? What should Kevin Smith have called it? ... Stripping Miri... Full Frontal?

How important is a name?

Hollywood's Future.

Is Hollywood going to last? ..In it's current form? Another 20 years... Yes or No?

What will change? More Musicals, nothing but comicbook adaptations? You tell me? What will change?

Mel Brooks: What did he have?

What made a Mel Brooks movie? The slapstick, the casting, Gene Wilder? What made those movies work for you? Did losing Wilder effect the later films?

Welcome back Bruce! Wilder and Brooks were great together. But Brooks was a comedic genius.

Blu-Malibu2009 03-09-2009 04:46 AM

For one thing he had balls. He wasn't afraid to make fun of anything and everything.

"The show MUST go on!"

Pre-1967...

Do you like or dislike.. films prior to Bonnie and Clyde (1967)? Is there a difference? Which is better?

Are older films out of date?

Remakes
Remakes
Remakes of great movies that don't need remade.

Also super liberal movies with agendas.

Courage or Blindness?

Was it balls or not caring?

Sometimes... I thought he didn't care. Technique, taste, ... is indifference courage?

That's the question.

bruce_pullen 03-09-2009 04:55 AM

Thanks.

Thanks. That means a lot...

I didn't think I'd be missed. Thank you.

I see the polls went to hell... in my absence.

 Imitation will destroy everything.

You are probably correct.

Not caring? I doubt he's really a racist, but Blazing Saddles sure would make you think he is if you look at the sheer number of n-bombs dropped in the movie instead of the fact that he flat-out makes fun of everyone including the racists.

My prediction for Hollywood in another 20 years is:

Sean Penn will end up owning all of the movie studios, making him the richest man in the world. Then, he persuades Lex Luthor to fire missiles into the San Andreas Fault, separating California from the U.S. mainland. He then purchases it, dubbing it "Happy Happy Joy Joy Penn Land".

His first order will be to demolish the Hollywood sign and replace it with a Barack Obama statue. There will be hundreds of global warming movies, where Al Gore narrates everyyyy singleeee oneeee. Rambo sequels will be replaced with P.E.T.A. action movies, but the Russians will still be the villains.....WWIII will start shortly after.

I think the title helped it's take, because it probably brought people in to see it who otherwise might not have wanted to. The problem with the title is that you go in knowing Elizabeth Banks is the co-lead, and you come out of the movie feeling ripped off.

No, I didn't see it in theaters. I had no interest in seeing it, but I ended up watching it on DVD with a friend.

On a side note: Is Kevin Smith overrated? Can we bring back the overrated threads?

I don't think he's had a single movie that has been both a critical and commercial success (and many probably weren't even either one). Chasing Amy is obviously the one exception, in what is otherwise a pile of turds.

bruce_pullen 03-09-2009 05:12 AM

All of the Above?

Not caring: means he did what he wanted.

Watching his films, you can't help seeing. He had fun making them. Not caring, implies Mel did what amused him. No more, no less. My question is: was he fearless or messing around?

Not giving a damn isn't exactly courage.

So was Mel fearless, indifferent, a genius, or all of the above?

Kevin Smith?

I didn't think you liked those threads Toefer?

But, if you want to bring it back. Be my guest.

Pistol Whipped (2007): New Low For Seagal?

The bowling alley thumbs up, is the least of this flick's problems. What were they going for? Crappy John Woo with Seagal in tow?

... I just don't know?
