I was curious what color people with projectors painted their ceiling. As you can see in the gallery, I have a white ceiling and get significant reflections from the projector and screen. I (and I am sure my wife) would be opposed to painting the ceiling black.
After discussion with my AV guy, I might be able to pass a darker brown color past the aesthetics police and it might do the trick with the decor as well. Please feel free to give opinions. I am currently in between doing something and leaving it as is. If you have a darker color, does it help the PQ? Thanks, Tom |

Hey Tom,
Nice theater. I have this exact thread in the home theater section, you may want to check it out. I have darker green side walls and did a lighter green on the ceiling, i also painted the screen wall black. I think the brown would be fine, it is a theater after all, to me asthetics come 2nd to picture quality. Lee |

Something darker and flat in finish. I will be doing my wall behind the screen, not that much of it is visible, as well as the ceiling black. I will carry that out the side walls a few feet. I will be doing the rest of the side walls in a dark gray.

My first home theater was a DIY project that converted a 12x14 bedroom into a batcave. I used the darkest purple-blue paint I could get and painted everything (walls, ceiling, trim). The only thing that wasn't this color was the screen wall (flat black) and floor (jet black carpeting).
With a 1.1 gain screen (100" NTSC format) and the CRT projector directly above my head there was plenty of light and oodles of contrast. First impression with the room lights off was a picture hung there in a black void. The room in the basement is a bit more wife-accommodating, but the colors are still on the dark side, including the ceiling and floor. I guess you could say the environment is 80/20 functional/ornate. Of course, I always have to remind myself the lowest black level I am going to get is determined from the amount of ambient light being reflected off of the projection screen. This includes projected light striking the room flat surfaces and bouncing back onto the screen. Brighter flat surfaces, more bounce. |

Here is how I feel on my room Before the treatments , my room sounded vary noisy . loud was when it was the worst Too . Adding the treatments did help with the way the room sounded in as far as not sounding noisy . Sounds seemed more defined coming from the areas they were coming from . I know it is not a night & day difference but it is noticeable to me . A couple of months ago I hung heavy curtains across the back of my room cutting off the kitchen from the room & that helped some as well , Not having the reflections off all the appliances & what not . |

mine is a dark blue/grey. Dark should help and you can use any colour that matches your room.

After all of that research, I am going to go with painting the ceiling. It has to do with getting past the aesthetics police in the house. I looked at the acoustical fabric panels, but it would have to be custom since my basement isn't square around the columns up front. Tom |

As you can see in my gallery....i painted my ceiling and screen walls FLAT BLACK. That is what i would recommend. However...i think that ANY dark color like Dark Brown, Dark Grey,(etc.) would be fine as long as it is FLAT!!! NOT GLOSSY!!! The glossy or eggshell paints reflect TOO MUCH! That is my opinion on it.
