While it only adds a few million to finish a major movie in 4K there is little profit in it. I think it is short sighted to only look at the current fiscal year but that is why even the next Star...

If anamorphic 4K video was shown on a 16:9 4K display than it would have to be scaled down by the player which would reduce video quality. If movies were made at 8K resolution and 8K displays were...

I corrected my post and while that did make sense back when DVD was launched I think the situation is different for 4K Blu-ray.

I think it is mainly to get people interested in the idea of Dolby Cinema and to try to sell that idea to theater owners.

It would be nice if Dolby provided more details about Dolby Vision and a...

The DCI standard doesn't use anamorphic encoding for scope movies so it wouldn't make sense to do that with 4K Blu-ray unless the DCI standard was changed. Also a problem with encoding scope movies...

It could be done but I don't think it will happen. 3D conversions are partly an attempt to fight piracy while HFR conversions wouldn't do anything about it.

I have to say that Dolby is doing a good job of promoting their HDR system. While I would prefer more details on what they mean when they talk about more colors the Dolby Cinema website is well made...

Avatar was part of a large wave of 3D movies and that has not yet happened with HFR. In my opinion for HFR to take off it would need a few dozen movies to be made in HFR.

MPEG is looking into the idea of adding profiles for HDR and WCG but unless they can get a large improvement in compression it probably won't result in anything. The number of consumer video profiles...

When Blu-ray 3D came out though the additional cost for adding the decoding hardware was fairly small and the cost difference was about $100. The cost difference for a 4K at 60 fps HEVC decoder is...

I have read only a few of his posts but I will give that a guess. Since a 4K enhancement layer can be larger than the 2K layer than even if the file size was doubled you could have lower quality 2K...

While Blu-ray makes up over 20% of unit sales it does generate over 30% of revenue so studios currently consider Blu-ray to be a premium product. When 4K Blu-ray comes out that could change if it has...
