This might be the problem right there. Passive 3D TVs have a limited vertical viewing angle. If it isn't viewed straight on or close to straight on, the image becomes unviewable in 3D. This is a limitation of the tech and the best way to solve it would be to get the TV as close to level as your eyes, or vice-versa.
This was exactly my thoughts yesterday when I read the OP's dilemma.
