Warner takes a lot of crap on these boards for stuff like BD-25 and low bitrates but I wonder why these same finger pointers aren't casting their stones at Fox for their heavy use of BD-25's and low bitrate MPEG-2 transfers. Maybe because they get a free pass simply because they've been on the "Blu" side the whole time or some other ridiculousness??
No, WB gets a lot of shit because of their consistently poor PQ. It has nothing to do with the size of the disc, as you mentioned above.

I couldn't care less about bitrate (I'm not one of those people who watches the movie with the bitrate gauge on,) but I do care about PQ, and unfortunately with a lot of WB's titles the reason we get poor PQ has little to do with bitrate. You could do Batman Begins at 40Mbit CBR and it is still going to look smooth. The DNR is burned into the master, and that is why people are irritated with WB, especially as they seem to be the only studio who have taken this attitude to grain reduction, though it may become more widespread.

When Fox went AWOL at the height of the format scuffle, they, rightly, took a lot of shit, but when they came back all was forgiven as they have given some of the best titles out there. If WB were to cut down on the DNR and leave the grain intact I'm quite sure the same would apply. Hell, Paramount have already been forgiven by pretty much everyone, and they stopped releasing on BD. Even Universal will be alright, I imagine they will be one of the most praised studios of the lot as they have lossless audio as standard and will be pushing the format to the very limits.

So no, it has nothing to do with the fact that WB weren't exclusive from the start, more likely it is their piss poor reputation on PQ and their general attitude of "oh that's good enough" or "only the enthusiasts will notice the missing grain, but they only make up 3% of the home video market". Yeah, that second quote comes directly from a higher up at Time Warner.
