All I can say is that the Blu-ray is faithful to the original intended look going by what I've seen on 35mm prints, and I doubt Paramount would purposefully destroy one of Tony Scott's most iconic films just so shortly after his unfortunate death.

Either way I'm perfectly happy with the current 3D Blu-ray of Top Gun, the absence of a 2D version doesn't bother me at all as my TV can convert 3D video to 2D perfectly anyway.
