It will be regarded by pundits as one of the rare, good uses of 3D.
I certainly hope you’re right, and I’m very confident that it will be full of beautiful 3D views just like, as you say, the first film had. Also, I’m very confident that Cameron will use 3D to support his story-telling in a much more considered way than most 3D films do, so I completely agree that there’s a good chance that those who really embrace the format might end up regarding it as one of the best examples of how to use 3D really effectively.

However… My concern is that, when the first film came out, for most people 3D was a new thing, but now it’s been around for over a decade and it’s been done very well (and, maybe more to the point, very obviously) elsewhere. I fear that, when it comes to 3D, the masses react best maybe to that obvious and unsubtle stuff - and that’s something Cameron isn’t a fan of. One of the things that I would cite for possible cause for alarm is that, getting on for a decade after Avatar, Cameron’s 3D had progressed and improved all the way to how it looked in …Alita Battle Angel?!

(When I say, “The masses”, that’s not meant to be derogatory, I just mean those people for whom 3D is something they can take or leave; they’ve seen a bit of it and quite like it sometimes but, on the whole, it’s not something they spend any time thinking about. AKA “Normal people”!)

Anyway, seems had to believe after all this time but, just two weeks today…

You say "the masses" but I would say "most people". Most people who go to a 3D movie don't expect to see everything kept behind the screen with only the odd bit of mild pop-out or to experience 3D so weak that it makes you wonder if you're in the wrong screening.

The preview I saw is better than Alita Battle Angel. There will be stuff floating outside the screen. Not like Sammy's Adventures, but much better than average.

James Cameron is all about spectacle and the 3D is native (with the odd converted shot I'm sure) so there's no way that this won't look good. The only question is how good.

If ever the case is to be made for HFR, a martial arts movie would certainly be one genre that would feature imagery that may well benefit from higher than 24fps.

The case does not need to be made for the advantage of filming a martial arts movie in 3D. There's probably more recent examples others could point to, but Dynasty was more than enough to convince me. It's case closed.

I guess the Thrilla in Manilla Muhammad Ali film didn't work out, but I would have loved to see that one too.

They have more freedom with the IA controls on smaller projects and with directors who treat them like a second cinematogtapher.

Jason Goodman's work is another great example. Why anyone would want their 3D to look like The Amazing Spider-Man, or even X-Men, over Julia X is beyond me. Also see Eric Deren's Hidden 3D vs. TASM. The issue is often directors and cinematographers who are inexperienced with 3D but act like auteurs anyway.
There was an interview quoted here a while back of a stereographer turning up his nose at any and all hyperstereo, as I recall the gist being that if you notice the 3D then the 3D is gauche, outre, and an affront to the noble profession of stereography?

I certainly would like to see a martial arts flick in HFR. Ideally that would remove all of the camera tricks normally used to hide the choreography in too many of them.

I know 3D can look great in a high-flying wire fu/chop socky martial arts flick, but can it look good in a more grounded martial arts flick?

Well, I'll rephrase that, as we know everything looks good in 3D: can a more grounded martial arts flick be a vehicle for outstanding 3D?

(Edit: I recently saw an indie film that was largely set in corridors/rooms, and had a lot of shots where the camera was physically moved in and out on objects, including a camera being lowered 40' straight down. Really could've done with 3D depth)

I think the stereographer's comments have been overdramatized here. He was just trying to avoid hyperstereo in wide shots, as a rule, to avoid its miniaturization effect.

As far as grounded martial arts 3D movies go, I quite enjoyed Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. Epilepsy warning though.

I know I had my fun with them, though the tone of the quote made it seem rather pretentious, at least to me, lending itself to this.

With more than a few folk on here having lauded 3D that I was not awed by, I'm partial to the theory that watching a lot of 3D leads a viewer to Adolf's enlightenment, as that guy sees 3D not as it is but as it should be (though he still gave JWD an accurate rating), and a professional stereographer has seen a lot of 3D.

Of course, there are members here whose 3D watch list is most prodigious and they're very grounded in their 3D views, so y'all have thrown a wrench in that theory

I'll have to add that film to the list.

New Gods: Yang Jian is getting a limited US release January 20, 2023. It played in China in 3D, but I'm not sure how it will show here. It's on the shortlist for Best Animated Film at the Oscars.

Shaakuntalam is releasing in India and possibly worldwide in 3D February 17, 2023.
