Default How will the release of Avatar affect Blu-ray?

Having seen the trailer of avatar the other day, and reading about how game changing the 3d production values are likely to be, the thought has run across my mind as to how this will affect bluray. Will avatar mark a decisive shift to 3d cinema? Will demands for 3d home entertainment render a 50gb storage format obsolete? Will bluray be able to handle such media?

Let the movie come out and live up to 1/100th % of the utterly idiotic hype that it is being fluffed with and then we will see.
I was underwhelmed with the trailer, I am still underwhelmed after sitting through the theatrical presentation.
Time will tell.

Like I stated in another thread (gonna start being endless I imagine), this will probably be the most hotly contested BD that's come out in a while. When it does come out next year.

+10, and may I add, it doesn't even look all that danged GOOD??

(I don't care that Cameron made another movie, I don't care that it took or didn't take the 12 missing-in-action years to make it, and I could care marginally about any "new technology", but only if the end result looks better than the dopey Battle For Terra thing I saw in the trailer...
If you were waiting for this, it clearly wasn't the movie itself you were waiting for.)

EDIT: Okay, somebody in the other thread made the "Ferngully" comparison--I like that one better.

Why would one movie do all that? Blu-ray can handle 3D, just not that well. Blu-ray isn't limited to 50 GB anyway, it will eventually get to 250 GB, maybe even 500 GB.

It's unlikely that more than 2 layers will ever become common practice. People always like to point at lab experiment examples of multiple layers, but they're too costly and require too much work for production. There is nothing existing which would be better served by making a special multi-layer disc than by simply putting material spread across multiple "normal" discs. In the case of a movie, any single movie can easily fit on a 50 GB disc without problem.

But that said, proper encoding of stereoscopic 3-D can fit readily on a 50 GB disc as well. I'd guess they could do up to ~3 hours without trouble, assuming the people encoding and mastering are competent at their craft.

I think it might have the possiblity of taking blu ray as a medium up a notch it they release it on Blu-Ray Only! They would have to let out all the bells and whistles on it. full BD-Live stuff, game and everything. make the video IMAX screen filling for the aspect ratio (but also include the standard 16x9 aspect ratio too as a seperate movie option) and 7.1, all 3 lossless formats, DTHD, DTS-HD-MA & LPCM on the blu. this must be a completley filled 50gb or introduce a 100gb disc with this. also unrated directors cut as well as theatrical release on the blu. it must be the first of it's kind for it's release, it should be steelbook, all the behind the scenes and all that good stuff. i think that would make a difference.

i think offering such a complete package ONLY on Blu will help boost sales. of course, this will mean the movie will have to have been sucessful to begin with. I hope it will be too!

sorry, just my dream, some movie must be the first "on blu only" release, if not, if we don't start somewhere, we will never get people beyond DVD; or am I wrong!?!

The only way a movie will have a big affect on Blu-Ray is if it only come out on Blu other than that it will have no affect.

To be realistic though, the movie has a $200 million budget, it will be released on dvd as well as blu.

Aren't they already 3D movies on blu. Moreover Blu-ray is capable of over 500Gb. Pioneer developed a 400Gb Bd compatible with current players/drive.

Furthermore, Pioneer is working on capacity of 500Gb and above.

Should really make no difference in my opinion...Just like "How will the Dark Knight affect Blu-ray" or "How will Watchmen affect Blu-ray"...just a highly anticipated movie with cutting edge effects..

If anything, Avatar will boost blu-ray sales if it's as good as people think it will be but it would take something a lot more groundbreaking to change the view of blu-ray and its technology that much.

I don't think it will have any more of an impact (Especially in sales) than TF2 or Ironman 2 (Next Year). I wasn't too impressed by the trailer as it looks like they took the technology behind Beowulf and made it a little better for this movie. Just my opinion though...

It won't. Blu-ray will continue. Eventually there will ne 3D displays that a few people will get, but theaters have always done things to stay in the fight. I would absolutely hate it if people stopped going to the theater. I love it. The theatrical 3D will be better than the home versions and will not impact Blu-ray other than to sell a lot of them when Avatar is released on the format.

I agree with this. I don't think this movie will affect blu-ray in any way, never mind negatively. Then again though, you never know, but the movie looks great so far and I'm very very eager to see this.

So I just watched the trailer, I wasn't too impressed. It just looks like Pocahontas in the future. For a script that he's been tweaking for over a decade, I'm not very impressed with the premise of the story.

The visuals do look nice though and I'm sure I'll check it out in theaters.

probably not, because chicks, for the most part are not into sci-fi flicks. Titanic was a love story about humans, not about humanoids or avatars. That and Celine is not doing the theme song either!
