So I was given an Xbox 360 that was being thrown out...the owner didn't have a power supply as it had blown out (tried plugging a US version into a UK plug...).
I was all excited that I was getting a free Xbox 360 - because as a true-Blu PS3 guy, I would never go buy one on my own Anyway - it was at this point I figured out the true cost of owning a damn 360... The purchase of the power brick (and I do mean brick) was a given - about $30. But then, I saw there was no hard drive attached. OK - would have to buy a lame Microsoft HD for about $130 for 120GB... I don't have a wireless adapter handy because my PS3 has it's own...so I'd have to buy that for another $25. THEN, to play online I have to buy a $50 membership...every year!?! For all that, I could buy a PS3 Slim. Seriously...why is this console so popular then you have to buy all these add ons? Needless to say, the damn thing is sitting in the corner, where it will stay.

I didn't own a PS3 until the Slim came out, but I've owned a 360 since about a year after they debuted. When I opened up the Slim box and began plugging things in, I was shocked that the power cable was just a cable. I was so used to having a brick as a power supply, haha.

I started calculating the cost of online, wireless, etc with my 360 and didn't bother investing in it. Just played the console offline to finish Blue Dragon and sold it off. The shaky reliability and overpriced peripherals just kills it for me.

derailing the thread by posting comments like that, I agree. I believe it can be civil.
Never owned a 360, not because any reason than I am not a HUGE gamer...PS2 was fine til the PS3 was released. The Blu-ray thing was a given. Got the Wii for the family and myself, its fun, but that fun i shortlived as my interest dies fast until the next big game. "I am jw and I approve this message

Wow, how did I miss this thread? Don't worry folks, I'm here now!
Dude would still have complained about "having" to buy other things to go with it. Peripherals are optional. I didn't complain about having to buy a separate HDMI cable, I didn't complain about having to buy a separate ethernet cable to connect my internet, I didn't complain about having to buy a charge pack for the controller, I didn't complain about having to buy controllers for Rock Band, I didn't complain about having to pay for online play. I still have never paid a cent for Live. I've also never bothered with it, but that's the point. I'm given the option of whether I want to pay for it or not. They're optional. Optional peripherals is a part of the reason why PS3 was more expensive to begin with. Things that were optional on the 360 allowed it to have a lower base price (compare especially optional external HD DVD drive to required BD drive). Users who didn't care about a harddrive or online or HD movies or whatever else wouldn't have to pay for them. Players who did want those features had to pay for them. But PS3 users have to pay full price even for features they're not interested in. All OP REALLY needed to play this was a new power source and maybe a small harddrive for game saves. Oh, and by the way, the power source is external for efficiency of heat dispersal. Apparently not a problem for the PS3, but 360s are known for being prone to overheating... can you imagine if they had internalized that brick on top of that? Trolls claiming failure rates around 90% would probably be accurate if the brick was internal. Quote:

As for built in HDD, it's kind of a moot point, since there are 360 bundles that come with a HDD already installed and at a more reasonable price than the individual HDDs are sold for. And the user can easily upgrade or switch harddrives as they desire either way, so I don't see how this is that different. The difference really is that PS3 REQUIRES a HDD, with the 360, it's optional and thrifty consumers who are willing to go without a HDD get a cheaper price accordingly. I don't see how this is a bad thing. I also don't see how it's a bad thing that someone would give away a 360 and not include a HDD necessarily with it... haven't you dudes ever heard of the phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth"? And wifi, well, let's just say that a wired ethernet cable is going to have less latency than wifi. Depending on your perception and the distance and all kinds of factors, the latency disparity might not be noticeable for you, but a wired connection is definitely better. Quote:

You said that it was like getting a PS3 without those things, it's impossible {last time I checked} to get a PS3 without wireless controllers.

my xbox came with wireless controllers, i also have a nice removable battery pack so i dont have to leave my system on just to charge it or use that nifty little 6 inch coard they give you to use, like they give you with the PS3. none of your points are valid. everything that comes with the PS3 comes with an Xbox except for an xbox comes with a headset.

Wireless does not suck for online gaming by the way. I don't know why you think that. Live is not $50 a year because it is better than the PSN at all. The PSN didn't exist when Microsoft was charging for Xbox Live (same goes for the original Xbox). By the way, I don't know when the last time you've seen or used the PSN, but it is not any worse than Xbox Live. I would even go as far as saying the PSN has past the quality of Xbox Live for the most part and is completely free. I don't know what you mean about having to replace things on the PS3 either. On the PS3, you can replace the hard-drive with just about any 2.5" HDD on the market or use an external hard-drive. There is no power brick that would need to be replaced, so if somehow the power cord were to be broken or lost, you could simply replace it with a standard PC power cord or a typical figure-8 power cord, easily found in stores, with most electronics, and online for very cheap. Is there something else I'm missing? Don't get me wrong though. I don't hold any grudges against Microsoft or the Xbox. For many people, the Xbox will suffice, at least gaming wise.

Coming from a xbox fanboy that just bought his first Ps3 There really was no diffrence on live from Psn and Live.I played uncharted fine with the Beta ,Only problem I had was 20 min to start up a round of killzone.Somebody explained to me though it was the game.Either way now I have both systems but I still love my xbox
.Now once Psn has cross game chat and end up getting Netflix thats another story. One thing I love about Psn I dont get called a beaner or we*bac* every time theres a sore loser and they hear my voice. |

Less crap talk is a good thing, but I think that is largely due to the fact that there is just less talk period. Add in the fact that a much larger portion of the XBox base is involved in competitive and clan gaming where trash talking is pretty common, and you do get more trash talk in XBL. Of course that is where having a well developed friend's list is a priceless thing. You can join in a party with your friends and choose to hear only the people in your party, or you can set your voice preferences to ALWAYS only hear those who are on your friend's list. I myself prefer to just ignore those who aren't too bad, and just mute those who I can't take. It's not usually a problem for me because 90% of the time I am in a party that is large enough to make up at least one whole team... if not both teams.
