Default PS3 Fan Noise?

I love my PS3 except for one thing, the fan noise. I have had it for a while now and never noticed the fan, until the 1.80 update. The fan goes into its highest speed within 5 minutes of watching a DVD and doesn't slow down until I take the DVD out. I even replaced it for a new one, but as soon as I did a system update it happened again. Should I replace it again? Can anyone help?

Can't say I've noticed a thing. My PS/3 is very quiet, and is on pretty much 24/7.

Mine is louder but doesn't go into the highest speed, but it is higher than the lowest speed. It's slightly louder than my 360 elite now, but you don't notice it at normal volume levels.

If you have the space, stand the PS3 vertically. It really helps the cooling.

Yeah, laid flat, my PS3 would reach the 2nd fan speed regularly in 10-15 minutes into a movie, but couple weekends ago I was watching a dvd set and ~3 hours into it the PS3 kicked into the 3rd fan speed which was finally too loud for me. With the PS3 still running, I placed it on the floor vertically, it shortly dropped back down to the 2nd fan speed.

Last Blu-ray movie I watched with the PS3 vertical, it never even kicked into the 2nd fan speed, stayed at the 1st fan speed the whole time.

I noticed that too with my brother's PS3. It was whisper quiet when we first bought it - sometimes I couldn't tell if it was on! Then, it just got noticeably louder after the update that added scaling. Almost as loud as my was when playing anything disc based. But at least it's not overheating, lol.

I'm assuming that all of the PS3 units affected use 90nm parts from the original PS3 launch. Right now, only the Korean 80 GB units use 65nm parts.

Also, the fan noise brought about by the 1.81 version update seems to affect only the 90nm PS3s. Other than that, no other problems so far (the Korean owners of PS3s say their 65nm units are damn quiet even with version 1.82 firmware)

My PS3 is whisper quiet, bought it at walmart just outside of toronto. I lay the unit on it's side, it is in a open area in the tv stand and is well vented. The unit does get hot but when the fan does come on you can hardly hear it.

I noticed mine gets super loud only when played a dvd, probably because it spins faster. but when watching a blu ray it takes about 2 housr for the high speed fan to kick in. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and its super hot up here too. My friend has one that is in the open in his basement and it never gets to the highest speed. Depends on where you live and what not.

The fan kicking on into high drive is completely normal. Its better to be safe than sorry and have the PS3 melt itself down.

For me it only does it when watching movies though.

Default PS3 Position?

Do you have it lying flat or on its side? I have heard that It gets better airflow on its side, but I would think the opposite is true.

Mine goes into warp speed on and off the whole time while watching any movies. Perhaps, since I was watching Season 2 Vol. 1 of Perry Mason, it was just like me and getting too excited and had to cool off...LOL!

Default PS3 Fan Noise during Blu-Ray playback?

After reading this site for a long time, I finally made the plunge and got a PS3. Out of the box, I noticed the systems fan kicking in. When playing blu-ray discs, it was fairly loud. When playing a traditional DVD, it was *really* loud. I was hugely dissappointed, since I purchased it as a media player, not so much for the games.

As for my setup, the PS3 (60 GB) is in a cool room, on an open glass componenet shelf - so heat shouldn't be a problem. On quite scenes, from ~8 feet away, you can hear the fans.

Have any other PS3 owners noticed this? I know noise is a very subjective thing, so it might be hard to answer (obviously, different people have different hearing, background noise, etc.)

Thanks so much for the help. I'm going to try to get a replacement if this isn't normal.

I just bought a new 80G flavor and it runs constantly cranking out folding@home jobs. I hear slight fan noise when the ambient noise in the room is about zero but it isn't a distraction. I'll throw in some Blu-rays and see if I can make it mad.

Will let you know.

Mine runs pretty loud too when I play BD (I have no games). I usually have the volume so loud that I cannot hear it or I am wearing headphones (ie when my wife is at home), so I really do not notice it. The guys over at AVS told me that this is really a heat issue, which is pretty obvious, so my main concern was it melting down like the XBOX 360. Last night I went and bought a fan to blow cooler air into vents, and it did not seem to kick into high gear. Of course this introduced the noise of the fan, but at least the PS3 is staying cooler.
