Talking My First Time With 'The X-Files' NO SPOILERS

I remember seeing random episodes of the X-Files off and on through the better part of my childhood. It premiered when I was 7 or 8 so I wasn't exactly the key demographic. But I watched later episodes as I got older but never on a steady basis. Don't think I ever even knew what night of the week it was on back than. However I recently found out my buddy has the entire series on disc, so I am planning on watching them as I have the time. I was only able to watch the pilot today, which I never saw before but thought it was pretty good. Anyways, I'm hoping to be able to watch the rest of the first disc tomorrow. I have a lot more time this week with so many shows being on hiatus at the moment. Being as I've never seen the major story lines or even how the shows ends, PLEASE DO NOT POST SPOILERS.

Awesome show for the first 6 seasons, then it gets kind of diluted.

Was it season 6 or 7 when Mulder left? I don't even know what happened with his character I just know he was there, than I didn't watch for awhile and Robert Patrick was. But I'll eventually find out, that's just A LOT of episodes to watch to get to that point, haha I have over 200 to watch in this series plus the two movies. Wonder how long it'll take me. Maybe I'll be done by spring.

I'm thinking 7. I know he was gone for most of 8.

There were good episodes in 6-9, but the show just felt convoluted (even for this show) and kinda slow paced.

After just finishing Twin Peaks this week, nothing will ever be as convoluted for me again lol, I think I will be able to handle this level after that nonsense.

Never seen that. But I put the first disc of Carnivale on my netflix dvd queue. Heard good things about it and with thew way HBO releases seasons of older shows it'll be 2020 before it comes out.

X-Files will NEVER get a blu release.

By "nonsense", take it you mean Peaks Season 2, where the good surrealist David Lynch we used to have in the 80's first became the loopy low-gag screaming-meemie schizophrenic David Lynch we have now.
Season 1 was atmospheric in its day, though.

Me, I've got X-Files on my Instant Netflix, and although I still think "Fight the Future" is on the list of the best TV-to-movie upgrades yet made, I have a general distaste toward the Fox-iness of 90's TV series. (And I still haven't even watched the free PSN season-recaps of "Lost".)
When I was growing up, Friday nights at 8 meant "Kolchak: the Night Stalker" , and now every Friday I ritually put one of the episodes on Netflix at 8pm...And don't even start about "X-Files is kind of like Kolchak!", since that's how we got that crappy name-only remake that tried to play up the "connection"--Nobody talks about that anymore.
But, now I've gone through all 20 episodes, and finished off the Star Trek:TOS Blu's, the Columbo's are near gone, and I'm starting to look at that first X-Files season that's been up at that top of the list unopened next to the "Heroes" and "New Doctor Who" that I'd pretty well given up on.

...Is the first pre-conspiracy season still a good series for those who liked the first movie but generally hate 00's-arc TV series?

Because it's easier to have courage from a safe distance away.

Hahahahaha, that is exactly one of the episodes I posted about here earlier that I remembered from my childhood to. Someone said it's from season 4 and it's called "Home"

Well thats a home I want no part of again ... lol first time I think I stayed up late in the 90s and only made it to the sheriff in bed with his wife part and then turned it off... Later when I was like in HS I made it through the whole ep

Yeah I remember that episode being hauntingly disturbing, so I am very much looking forward to watching it again, but I'm only at half-way through season 2 right now, so I got a ways to go.

I know I spotted quite a few when I watched the whole series a few years back.

It really didn't take me long at all to finish the whole thing probably 2 months, I was suprised how fast I got through 9 seasons worth and two movies.
In 5 episodes, I've noticed a lot of people I had no idea where on this show way back when. Lots of familiar faces, like Seth Green.

My cousin is a hardcore conspiracy theorist, and I figured three things where very bad for that breed of people to be exposed to. The X-Files, the internets, and liner notes of cds.......

I've seen the first 10 or 11 episodes now, and was just wondering when do the larger arcs actually start? Or does it stay monster of the week for quite some time. The only episode I haven't really liked is the last one I watched "Eve" it just didn't interest me at all.

I believe that's the ne where the band Eve 6 got their name from.

Did you see the episode that is basically The Thing yet?
Damn fine coffee!

The overall story arcs do not really pick up that early in the show. I wish I could experience the show over again, from the beginning as a fresh viewer. So many later shows on network television basically ripped off different elements from it, that the show might not seem wildly original to someone who has seen a lot of current television. But the quality of writing and production is top-notch, week after week. The first season starts ramping up the mythology near the end of it, and gets ramped up much more in the second season.

Got through a few more episodes today, man this first season guest stars list is impressive. Pretty much all those unknowns have gone on to be well known. I laughed when Callum Keith Rennie showed up because I'd never seen him so young before, and the fact that he was in the 2nd X-Files movie, but obviously a very different character.

Also character actor Mark Sheppard that plays Crowley on Supernatural. He seems to make the tv show rounds these days. But considering I never saw him prior to BSG, he's about 15 years younger than I'd ever seen him before.

Lots of character actors got famous for their roles on X-Files, springboarding them to other shows.

Also, don't forget about:

[Show spoiler]Terry O'Quinn aka John Locke from Lost
who played a few different characters over the run of the show and was in the first movie as well.

As for the show itself, it remains among my top few favorites of all time. I was on board from the premiere and the pilot hooked me. Althought I missed a few episodes in the later seasons due to being in college, I pretty much followed it cradle to grave.
There's no question that the later seasons suffered, particulary with the absence of Duchovny, who always was the heart of the show. But, having said that, I also don't think seasons 6-9 are the barren wasteland that some would indicate. IMHO, there are still many good episodes in those seasons, but most are stand alone as the mythology gets really tiresome by that point.

As for Season 1, my favorite episodes were:
Pilot, Deep Throat, Squeeze, Ice, Darkness Falls, and Tooms.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?

Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
