Hope you're not attached to any of the extras on those DVDs (commentaries, Kieslowski short films) because many of them are not duplicated on the Criterion set.

I'm Italian and I so badly need these blu ray editions, but they're locked in Region A.
I have a Panasonic blu ray 3D player, is it possible it will unlock the discs for me automatically?

From Criterion.com:

Quote:
The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on home video. Our editions often feature restored film transfers, commentary tracks, and other supplemental features that the company pioneered when it released its first laserdiscs, Citizen Kane and King Kong, at the end of 1984. Ever since, Criterion has been working closely with filmmakers and scholars to ensure that each film is presented as its maker would want it seen and published in an edition that will deepen the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema.
They buy the license to distribute the films in US-Canada usually. You might be able to get a different release in another country.

In short, Criterion films on blu ray are as close to perfect as the company can get them.

I don't know what kind of model you have, but I had my Panasonic player hardware-modified to be able to play discs from all regions.

Your best bet is to wait for the Three Colours Trilogy Blu-ray courtesy of British label Aritificial Eye. Hopefully, there will be a review of the AE release on this site soon.

"undoubtedly" would have been more appropriate than "hopefully".

What's the basis for this statement? Generally, Artificial Eye have a very good track record on blu, I own many of their releases and haven't been disappointed thus far.

OK, then. I guarantee that we will have a full, detailed review. How's that

Great, I did not doubt that.

I'm leaning towards the Criterion for now because I love the packaging, but if the VQ and AQ are very similar, I might consider the AE.

Well, just read the description on Amazon.co.uk: no packaging, but all three films in just one disc, PAL colour encoding, no DTS-audio.
Criterion largely beats the Artificial Eye edition.

I strongly recommend that you DO NOT read what is posted on Amazon to form an opinion. The three films cannot be on one disc. And Artificial Eye are a terrific company known for their quality products.

Thanks.

If you're picking this up, I also recommend getting The Double Life of Veronique during the sale if you don't already have it.

I feel like a numbskull. I bought the Criterion DVD years ago and still haven't watched it.

Looking forward to double-dipping on the Trilogy next week though.
