Lightbulb Blu-ray.com Great Drummer Debate (post your picks!!)

The Great Drummer Debate
(open for submissions until September 25th!!)

NOMINATION STAGE:

The following contest involves drummers, and drummers only. The format is similar to a playoff system, where the top seed is paired against the lowest seed, e.g. #1 vs. #16, #2 vs. #15, etc. For the nomination stage, each forum member can submit a list consisting of no more than 16 of his/her favourite drummers for consideration in this competition. Each member must post his/her list in this thread; entries sent via PM will be disregarded. All participants must specify his/her top pick among their list of drummers: that selected drummer will receive two votes, all others receive one each. The purpose of the dual vote is to determine which drummers will receive top seeding in each round.

A tournament bracket (example below) will be used to keep track of all results for every round.

Nominations will be open until 11:59pm PST, September 25; any submissions after this time and date will be deemed ineligible. Match-ups for each round will be random and determined by i) total votes for each drummer, and ii) the number assigned to every drummer for each round is based on total votes received, i.e. more votes = higher number assigned.

Rules:
  • Each round lasts roughly one week (begins Monday, ends Sunday)
  • Once a vote is cast for a nominee in a given match-up, that nomination is final. No revocations or revisions to votes already placed, therefore, the onus of responsibility lies with each member to ensure that the correct vote is cast for that match-up.
  • The majority vote from each match-up is declared the winner and moves on to the next round.
  • In the event of a tie, a sudden death face-off will occur. Members must cast their vote within 24 hours of this thread being posted for his/her vote to be considered (end time for this face-off will be indicated at the top of this thread, and the winner will move on to the next round).
  • Rules may be added and/or modified as the tournament progresses.

Great thread idea Ken! And I love the process you've chosen to determine a "champion"! I just wish I knew enough about drumming to add my choices based on style, technical prowess, rhythm, etc., but I'm going to give it a try. I'll post my list later today!

My top 16, really had to think about it, so many great ones. In my list some are there for technic, others innovators, others as most influencial. My top 8 though are mostly drummers that just have the right stuff to really get me into it, feeling like air drumming

Neil Peart
John Bonham
Buddy Rich
Gavin Harrison
Keith Moon
Ian Paice
Terry Bozzio
Mitch Mitchell
Gen Krupa
Ginger Baker
Bill Bruford
Carl Palmer
Manu Katche
Steve Gadd
Mike Portnoy
Stewart Copeland

It does get hard past number 8 or so as there are so many greats ones out there.

Very honorable mention for 1 I darn forgot Kenny Aronoff

Let's get this thread moving

P.S for those unfamilliar with my #1 Neil Peart (Bugs me how Letterman just screws up his name, it"s not prononced like peer-t but like purr-t)

My # 4

Thanks buddy! I had to really think about it and decided to look through my collection. When I did my choices kinda jumped out at me. I'm no expert (or even novice) when it comes to the drums, but I enjoy the work these guys have done, so that's why I chose them.

John:
I'll be honest: other than a handful of drummers who are often credited by their peers as being influential and/or in the spotlight because they're the "unofficial spokesperson" for a given band (e.g. Lars Ulrich comes to mind), I don't know that much about drumming either.

I will credit pentatonic for motivating me to start a new contest, as a way to keep things lively in the Music sub-forum, plus, it's a natual progression from the guitarist discussion that we had for a while.

It's going to take me a while to put together my own list of 16; good thing I've got just over a week to do so.

Like I said in another post....I just picked the ones who's work I've enjoyed. If some of the guys to come want to debate drummer style, technique, influence, etc, I'll have to sit idly by and just take in the information. But that's cool too as I love learning!

And as far as Pat is concerned...yeah, he's alright I guess ().

OK, it took me a while to figure mine's out, but here's my list.

1. John Bonham
2. Neil Peart
3. Keith Moon
4. Carl Palmer
5. Bill Bruford
6. Terry Bozzio
7. Stuart Copeland
8. Gavin Harrison
9. Dave Lombardo
10. Danny Carey
11. Ian Paice
12. Bill Ward
13. Phil Collins
14. Mike Portnoy
15. Mitch Mitchell
16. Michael Giles (From King Crimson's first lineup. Just listen to 21st Century Schizoid Man if you know what I mean)

I know that some people put in jazz drummers like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, and while both are equally amazing, I feel that I have to put in a list of rock drummers since most of the drummers mentioned here are rooted from rock.

Hey, you like what you like. I figured that the majority of selections would be rooted in rock/metal anyway, but if someone wants to give honourable mention to drummers in other musical genres, they're welcome to. I expected some nods for Rich and Krupa.

Just my 2cents, this isn't 'who is the best drummer', its 'who's the most popular drummer'. These type of 'contests' never draw out the best only who people have heard of more

Isn't that the case with any contest, where selection is based on familiarity and/or popularity? Also, there is no established criteria which one can use to measure the skills set of any musician, so as to determine who is more derserving of a nomination nod over one of their peers. Selections have, and will always be, subjective to some degree.
