That's all assuming that Toshiba is actually continuing to produce the A2 model, which seams highly unlikely. More logically, since the replacement model is available, the $198 deal is just to get rid of existing inventory... and unlikely to last all that long. That said, I suppose that AWESOME Venutrer player could be put on sale for $199 at one of the couple of online stores that actually sell that thing. I'm sure it will just blow away anything in it's path.

Seriously, though, I would imagine $249 will be the main "entry" price for HD DVD players going into the holidays. Now Blu-ray definitely doesn't need to match that, but having players readily available in stores for $399 would be nice... and not just the 40GB PS3, though I think that will be a great start.

I'll say again for the millionth time. HD-DVD is the format fighting for its life. Blu ray has too much support and is plain and simply a better technology. Best case senario for hd-dvd is co-existing with blu-ray, while blu-ray could easily kill off hd-dvd. Remember also that sony pictures will never be hd-dvd, while hd-dvd doesn't have that power. They can't pay off studios forverer.

It won't because Blu-ray players will be lowered to counter and it's status quo once again.

What next $99 is the magic price, then $49, it never stops.

A clever salesman will have no trouble pushing cheap 1080i players on the general public who to be honest aren't probably going to be thinking of the difference between 1080i and 1080p, all they care about is the discs are HD to go with their new HD set they picked up.
$399 PS3's are a start, but I would like to see Blu ray players closer to $300 to compete, they would move a ton a that price, though I do think the 40 GB PS3 will sell quite well.

Does it really tell anything? That price drop effectively killed the X-Box add-on. Can you see asian manufacturers rushing to make HD-DVD players? Can you see an integrated X-Box/HD-DVD product coming? The more protracted this war gets, the more alienated Toshiba becomes. Hence, the payoffs.

Lame.

Off-Topic Discussion thread?

Isn't there a plan to create a safe play area for concern trolling?

Well the race is'nt over. Even though Blu Ray is the best format a lot of "normal" consumers dosent know the diffenrence between the 2 formats. So if they see a sign where you can get HD DVD for 200 $ and on the shelf next to it you get Blu Ray for 400$, most of them will get HD DVD.

I think price is very important at this stage.

I see and hear this a lot from HD-DVDers. I used to think that you guys hate Blu-Ray. However, you don't. All of you guys have these cheap paperweight Toshiba players with little/none of the titles that you want to watch. You lack content. In your heart, you would absolutely LOVE to buy a Blu-Ray player in order to gain access to the content. However, you are intent on paying DVD player prices. This is creating somewhat of a bottleneck, which leads to a backlash against the price of Blu-Ray players. At some point, you guys are going to have to realize that if you want Honda/Toyota/Nissan quality and reliability over Kia/Suzuki/Hyundai then you are going to have to pay a premium. Don't you think CE and Studios are concerned about hardware and software prices being at DVD level? THE HDM MARKET HAS TO BE VIABLE.

Alot of people in that particular sinario may well wonder why the hd-dvd player is so cheap (if they were alongside each other)...
