Default What's the deal Disney?

What's the deal with 101 Dalmations not being on Blu Ray? Are they trying to make more money on us?

They are making sure things get done right. They annouced some time ago that Sleeping Beauty would be their first Blu. They weren't going to just postpone all of their DVD plans becuase of it though.

a TON of work goes into Disney's platinum releases, and it's quite possible that their simply wasn't time to get 101 or Jungle Book out. Quite likely though, they just wanted something that really showcased Blus capabities, and decided to skip them in favor of releasing Sleeping Beauty.

And if you haven't figured it out by now, Disney is the master of re-releasing movies and making people buy them (Star Wars may actually hold that title as people complain like no tomorrow everytime there is a new release with extra/different footage and yet they still sell like hotcakes).

Personally I don't expect to see 101 Dalmations on Blu for several years, so I gladly picked it up on Blu-ray.

101 Dalmatians is also a 1.33:1 format film.

Likely Disney chose Sleeping Beauty because it's one of their most lush 2.35:1 Widescreen films.

You don't have to buy the DVD.

Just wait for the Blu, even though it may be a long time away.

Not only that, but it was made in widescreen (As in drawn, painted, etc all in Widescreen. Of course they supposedly lost a load of money on it, but still)
So putting it in Widescreen wouldn't be a huge challenge since it is alraedy done. They would just need to clean it up and such.

That's what all movie studios do...make money on us. It's their job.

They have a schedule of releases. I think the Special Edition of The Sword In The Stone will likely be the last title released on DVD (that doesn't have a Blu-ray release as well) and everything after that will be released on both DVD and Blu and eventually just Blu. Next year we have Pinocchio and Fantasia to look forward to on both Blu-ray and DVD.

Fantasia is comming on BD? Now that will sell well. Excellent sound and wicked looks. Pure awesome. Is it the original Fantasia or Fantasia 2000? Or are they the same movie?

I think they might release both (no they're not the same movie) but who knows with Disney.

Disney puts out *multiple* catalog titles every year, including their animated features. BLu-Ray is a new medium, and it makes no sense for Lucas, Spielberg, Disney, Jackson, etc. to flood the market with their big titles while the market is still in its infancy.

And 101 Dalmatians did *not* get bypassed for a Blu-Ray release because it is hand-drawn or because of its art direction. It was bypassed because it is one of the 14 Platinum titles, and Disney won't start releasing those in Blu-Ray until Sleeping Beauty this Fall.

Never fear, you'll be seeing lots of Disney animation on Blu-Ray (Hercules will be coming sooner rather than later). But Disney isn't choosing these based on line drawings -- the decisions are based on the market.

Then the website is ignorant. Last year alone, Disney released Dinosaur, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Cars and Ratatouille PLUS the great Mars and Beyond as a supplement on Roving Mars.

If Disney only realeased 2 animated films a year, it would take 30 years for their titles to street on Blu-Ray. Disney is releasing 2 *PLATINUM* titles a year, consisting of their 14 highest selling titles on home video. That list of 14 does not include titles like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, The Rescuers, The Black Cauldron, Fantasia/2000, Hercules, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, etc etc etc. Everything else under the Disney sun will street in due course.
