Onkyo 806

[TENSE]

does any one have this receiver? if so, how good goes it sound? how does it stack up with the onkyo 805? is there a big difference in terms sound quality between the 805 amd 806 like night and day? well, i would love to hear your opinion guy's!

I'll let you know in a day or two.. I just ordered an 806 from CrutchfieldCanada.com and it's on its way here. I'd originally ordered a 905 but when my wife saw the invoice, she said WTF??? so I had to downgrade a bit..

That'll teach her to pay attention when I ask if its ok to get the "expensive" one and she says "Ya whatever"...

I have no frame of reference to compare it to an 805, since I've never owned Onkyo before, but I can compare it to my Yamaha THX enabled, 120watt/ch 7.1 receiver that I'll be replacing for its lack of HD codecs...

Well, after a heavy drooling session upon opening the box, my first impressions of the 806 are this:

• Very high quality build. It's a tank!
• The sound is very good, out of the box. I haven't even run the auto setup for the speakers yet, so it should only get better.
• One odd thing, that's either due to the fact I'm running HDMI->DVI currently to my projector, or that I have a crappy Blu-Ray player, but HDMI refuses to connect properly with my projector/player. The readout on my player goes back and forth from 1080p to 1080i and eventually gets a "no signal" error on the 806. I think this will clear up when I go full 1080p/HDMI on my projector (or at least I hope it does!)

I'll post more comments as I come across stuff

This is interesting. Maybe I don't understand your situation...do you have the Player outputting 1080p?

My 720P w/ DVI input projector can only accept up to 1080i, and I have my Samsung BDP1400 set to output 1080i. For some reason, even before changing amps, it resets to other resolutions. With the new amp, by running HDMI to the amp, then the PJ, it can't negotiate the correct setting. I have the amp's HDMI output set to "Through" so as supposedly not to interfere. The manual says HDMI->DVI can give unpredicatble results, and I think I'm proof of that.

Anyhow, as soon as I upgrade to a 1080p projector, I'd assume all is well (1080p pipeline from A to Z)

i don't have this unit, but we did carry the 805 at work and subbed it out in the exact setup for the 806. here are my initial impressions

-as previous poster said, this thing is a tank. if possible i think that they added 3-5 pounds to the 806 from last years model.
-the 5 hdmi inputs/1 output are a huge step up, further future proofing this reciever.
-i was actually most impressed with the remote as they made it look less complicated and more functional as to not scare the hell out of potential buyers, and more importantly their wives.
-initial setup was a snap, but if you have set up one onkyo 8 series reciever you have set them all up for the most part. lol

overall, i feel it is a worthy replacement to a phenominal reciever. most will probably do what i did though and grab the 606 or 706 as the THX certification means very little to a fair bit of people, at least in my area.

I heard that the DAC's aren't as good as the 805's,the 805 has Burr Browns and I'm not quite sure what the 806's have but I know its not the BB's,I originally wanted to trade my 805 in for the 806 but a few people on here recommended I'd be better off with the 805 if I didn't need the extra HDMI inputs.

You are correct, the 805 has PCM1796 Burr Brown DAC's found in the $5,000 Yamaha RX-Z11 and Denon $5,500 5308CI, the 806 has Cirrus Logic DAC's.

I think the 805 has better power, although the missing BTL capability did bother me, but for $614 new I couldn't pass up the 805. I listen to a lot of SACD's with the Oppo 980H that has DSD output, so I wanted DSD>Analog too which the xx6 series don't have.

The 5 HDMI inputs is pretty kick ass, but I only have three devices right now that I use for HDMI. If I were to add a standalone Blu-ray player for bitstreaming, I'd go component for my satellite dish.

I haven't heard the 806, but I have an 805. I love it, but I wish it had more than 3 HDMI inputs. If Oppo's upcoming player has the specs I am hoping for that may be a moot point though.

I also have an 805, I'm considering just getting an HDMI 1.3 switch from Monoprice if I need the extra inputs.

wow! well since im going to run a 2.1 system for quite while, this feature would greatly convince me to buy the 806.

so basically the 805 just has a little better sound quality than the 806 then?
so if i was to compare them head to head, the 805 would sound better than the 806 like a difference between night and day? because seriously, as my first receiver, i think the 806 would be the better choice. it still has 130 watts x7 and plus has 5 hdmi inputs! if the sound is not that big of a difference then, i now know whats going to be under my Christmas tree this Christmas!

So if someone has the 805, and has 24/192 TrueHD bitstreamed to the receiver, what happens? Will it sound different, or make no sound at all? I just got the 875 and it only does 24/96, so I was curious. Thanks!

I have a few REM DVD-Audio's with 24/192 stereo tracks.

Is there a big difference between 24/96 and 24/192? I don't think so. But I don't want processing done where it doesn't need to be done, which is why I got the 805 as I wanted DSD>Analog with no PCM processing. I do think that sounds better when I go between the two.

There are no movies with 24/192, only audio discs.
