Default HD audio question?...

How much different can sound be from 5.1 dts to one of the 7.1 lossless? I have a regular 6.1 surround system that I had with a regular dvd player. I just upgraded to the Panny 35 blu-ray player. I still have a regular 6.1 receiver. But, switched the connection to optical cable(no dvi on the receiver). And when I played a blu-ray it sounded better. Could that be due to the blu-ray, optical cable or both?

And yes...I will be getting a new receiver.

Thanks!!

Im assuming that your comparing DVD DTS to Blu-ray HD Audio. In that case there is a jump but can't really comment. I can comment that Blu-ray DTS Core will sound better thn DVD DTS.

Your 5.1 vs 7.1 question. More speakers does not mean better sound. In fact, a poorly laid out 7.1 system will sound worse than a properly laid out 5.1 system.

After reading to theend of your post, it sounds better because the Blu-ray elgacy codecs, (Blu-ray Dolby Digital and DTS) are encoded higher bitrates. Now, I know bitrates doesn't necessarily mean better sound, hence the battle between Dolby True HD vs DTS HD MA but lets not start a war here. IMHO, the jump from legacy codecs on DVD to blu-ray legacy codecs is a bigger jump than blu-ray legacy codecs to HD Audio.

But if your getting a new reciever, enjoy your HD Audio. You will hear a difference.

optical will only give you 2.1 from the HD or lossless codecs.
