Default Recommend me some Asian movies please!

Hey guys!

I would just like to know what are the Asian movies that are worth it to buy on blu-ray. Right now I have Shinobi that I got last week which was great. Also I have Warriors of Earth and Heaven and House of the Flying Daggers.

I would like to get some more movies like these. Movies about the Samurai or acient Chinese Dynasties (I have the last samurai as well so) but you know what I mean?

Thanks for the advice.

Flash Point
Red Cliff
An Empress and the Warrior

All of 'em are imports. Get Ip man and Flash point if you really like martial art movies.

Hard Boiled and The Killer - Old School Woo is the best.

Also The Bride With White Hair and Chinese Ghost Story, Once Upon A Time in China, and A Better Tomorror are musts.

EDIT: I know some aren't martial arts films, but they are truly badass!!!

Are those on Blu-Ray? If they are, I missed the memo.*

*=Batman Begins reference, not an Asian film but still.

It's not on Blu-Ray but give Lord of the Wu-Tang a try. The DVD release of the film is retitled as The Evil Cult. It's got Jet Li, Colin Chou, and Sammo Hung.

Actually I'm pretty sure I read that the version of Hard Boiled with Stranglehold is not in HD.

My first recommendation would be "Mongol". As for Asian movies on BD that are NOT about Chinese Dynasties and the like... I would recommend "Oldboy".

13 beloved/ 13 game of death.

just recently watched it.

It's a thai movie.

If you don't watch it, there's no point in getting interested in Asian movie.
Because this movie is a must!

Since I can't make a new thread, being new, I'll post this here.

Becoming disappointed in what Hollywood is shoving out nowadays, I've turned my attention towards Asian cinema to rekindle my faith in movies. I've always been a fan of Asian films. There's something about them that just makes them so appealing, rather than American films. I wanted to focus my collection on Asian films for a little bit and focus some of my purchases towards them for a while.

Now what would a recommendation thread be without what I like. My exposure to Asian film is very limited, but I have seen a fair share more than most people. I really enjoy Kung Fu Hustle. I love the fast paced, ridiculous action and would like to see more movies like that. Kill Bill also comes to mind, but that's more Asian-inspired than an actual Asian film. But films along those lines.

Another genre I've become interested in is ancient history stories such as Hero, another one I've seen and enjoyed. The martial arts in the film are such a spectacle to look at. I'd really like to see more like this. I have heard of Red Cliff, an ancient history film, and I do plan on picking that up.

I have recently placed an order for Oldboy, so I know about the Vengeance trilogy. I also enjoy this aspect of Asian films. Dark, gritty, and holding no bars back. Just revenge in its purest form. I'd like to know of more films like this as well.

So basically, the types of films I'm looking for are silly and nonsensical, good martial arts, historical pieces, and dark side of humanity films. If you have any other films a newbie like me should check out, feel free to let me know! Also, I'd prefer the all the titles recommended be on Blu-Ray. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried Thirst (by the director of the Vengeance trilogy)? That's a brilliant film, but be sure to get the Korean edition, not the UK edition. The UK one is severely cut by about 20 minutes.

Welcome to the site!

Hmm...not sure about silly ones or dark-side-of-humanity ones, but these are the ones that spring to my mind based on all this...

Good Martial Arts
"Chocolate"
"Ip Man"
"Invisible Target"
"Fist of Legend"
"Flash Point"
"Kill Zone" (aka "SPL")
Either "Ong Bak" movies (the first one looks terrible on BD, but it is fun)
"The Protector"
"The 36th Chamber of Shaolin"
"Unleashed" (aka "Danny the Dog")

Historical Pieces and Wuxia
"Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"
"Fearless"
"House of Flying Daggers"
"Legend of the Black Scorpion" (I think it's coming to BD soon)
"Legend of Fong Sai Yuk"
"The Ninja Scroll" (anime) (DVD only)
"Ran"
"Rashomon" (DVD only)
"Red Cliff" (Internation Version preferred, personal favorite)
"The Seven Samurai" (coming to BD soon!)
"Shinobi: Heart Under Blade"
"Shogun Assassin"
"Tai Chi Master"
"Throne of Blood" (DVD only)

Dark side of humanity
"Ichi the Killer" (crummy BD, but it is wicked)
"Perfect Blue" (anime) (DVD only)
Journey of Al The Strange (the blog)

Thank you, both of you! I'm definitely taking some of those suggestions into consideration. I had known of another film by the director of the Vengeance trilogy, and I just didn't know what it was called. I'll definitely be checking out some of those wuxia films.
