Possible 24p setting playback problem on the PS3 fix.

Hello all, I am a long-time reader of this forum, but I wanted to post this heads up to anyone that might be affected.

After downloading and installing the latest update, my standard dvd's looked great; however, when I tried to watch "Dead Man's Chest," my TV did not recognize the signal.

I became very worried, so I called the PS3 support line.

They gave me a quick fix. For my particular TV (Samsung LNS4095D) required that the "24p" setting be turned "Off" instead of on "Automatic."

Anyway, thought I would share that. The first place I came when I was staring at a blue screen when it was supposed to be a blu-ray movie.

Thanks for the info. Automatic is suppose to try and communicate with the display at 1080P/24 and then if the display does not support 1080P/24 the PS3 should automatically switch to 1080P/60. Do to a incompatibility issue one may need to manually turn off the 1080P/24 mode if the auto is not working correctly.

Sometimes its not best to let your equipment make decisions. If you know the capabilities of your equipment, if would just adjust to those.
For instance, my samsung hl-s5087w is only capable of 1080p@60 HZ so then i know that disabling 1080p@24Hz is the right move.
I highly suggest everyone to look in their TV's Manual and checking to see at what operating frequencies your TV supports. If its a multiple of 24, then your TV can accept a 1080p@24Hz signal. There are some newer TV's that accept 1080p@120Hz which is 24Hz x 5 and 60Hz(broadcast signal) x 2.

That's not quite true at the moment. For instance, the newer Sharps that run their panels at 120Hz does not accept a 24Hz signal.

In fact, accepted input signals and screen refresh rates are almost completely irrelevant. At the moment, only a few high-end projectors and Pioneer plasmas can make use of the 24Hz signal (and there are conflicting reports on whether the Pio's actually are handling these correctly--go to the Plasma sites for more).

For 60Hz fixed frequency panels, 24Hz input could do more harm than good. My friend's new LCD seems to "stutter" once every few seconds with 24Hz input. Setting the PS3 to 60Hz fixed the problem. It really depends on whether the TV or the PS3 is better at the 24Hz->60Hz conversion, but I'd surprised if there is any TV that's better than the PS3 given that 24Hz input signals are just starting to emerge (so the TV manufacturers had little equipment to test against) while the PS3 has been testing their output against 1080p60 panels from day one.

Unless your TV can refresh at a multiple of 24Hz, AND it can actually correctly map the 24Hz input to the output without judder (and the last point is not a given--manufacturers cut a lot of corners in the electronics, so some things that might seem to "obviously" work often do not), you should set the PS3's 24Hz output to "off".

Thanks for posting this. I couldn't figure out why my blu-ray disks wouldn't play all of the sudden. I sent back my last 2 netflix movies as being damaged before realizing it might have something to do with the 1.80 PS3 update and did some searching. Good thing we have the same tv (lns-4695d, close enough), this post came up as the 2nd result in a google search.
