Far too little information.

What size room?

What's your budget?

What kind of movies do you watch?

tl;dr: a soundbar will not give you true 5.1, ever.

If you have the space, 5.1 speakers are a better option.

I would always go with a separate speaker setup over a sound bar. Even if you can't afford a full 5.1 setup right now, just get the front three and add the surrounds and sub as the budget allows.

hell, I'd rather a 2.1 if I had to choose between tv speakers and a soundbar.
I have a dedicated 2.0 system for music, but, I do watch movies & Netflix on it sometimes and it sounds amazing!

I also think by the time you get to a really good SB ($) you could have gotten a really nice 2.1 system with $ to spare.

5.1 will definitely sound better than a Soundbar.

You'll also have the advantage of being able to hear more accurately the creator's intentions when it comes to the sound stage.

Strongly Recommended, but that being said, I've heard good soundbars, they just won't be rocking movies in true 1:1 representation.

Forget the soundbar my friend! Like my bud Solar suggested,....go with a simple stereo setup for now, then add on as your budget allows....the used market is a great way to save bigtime $.

A few years ago I was in a similar predicament. I had envisioned a good sound bar and went to Best Buy to check them out. A hour or so later I walked out with a Receiver, 2 bookshelf speakers, and a subwoofer. And I lived in an apartment at the time so I didn't want to go overboard and budget was an issue for me as well (luckily they had 24 month no interest financing for some of the bill!)

The way I reasoned it was that it was a higher upfront cost for the separate system but eventually I added rear speakers and really enjoy it now. Basically as others have pointed out, unless you go with a Sonos system or one or the more expensive wireless speakers sets, you're coming out about even as far as cost. And also as Krelldog pointed out, there are used speakers and sets available all over. Phone apps like OfferUp or iOffer are great to see what people around you are trying to get rid of and it allows you to save on shipping from somewhere like eBay. Also, you can check around on Best Buy's site for open items or clearance. I've seen some good deals on higher end equipment there for low end prices on occasion.

Good choice on going for the 5.1. You will definitely reap the benefits in the future.

Agreed, with my latest setup, that's what I did, I scoured Craigslist, the Pawn Shops and even Ebay to get the specific gear I had been recommended and that I had researched and found to be what I had been looking for. I don't regret it one bit, and I'm happy with what I have currently even if it's used or second hand. : )
