France EASY VIRTUE (Alfred Hitchcock, 1928)

I just discovered this on Amazon.fr: release date 10/21/2014!

http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B00M262JW2?_...I3VC1LZDLMHBY5

Also released the same day are two more Hitchcock silent films: DOWNHILL and THE LODGER.

THE LODGER has already been released on Blu-ray in the UK and DOWNHILL is available on Blu-ray from Amazon.es.

This is the first I've seen EASY VIRTUE released anywhere in the world on blu!

Yes, it's a first !
I've aksed on Facebook Elephant if they will release more silent Hitch. They told me it could happen in the near future, but no detail at all about what or when.

Guess I should post in the country of release. I listed this months ago on my North American thread Hitchcock on blu-ray.

The solitary review on Amazon.fr states that the restoration is poor (looks like VHS) and the disc lacks any musical accompaniment including the stated "bonus orchestration."

Can anyone who actually has the disc corroborate?

The only thing I've read is that the restoration has been done from a source which was not in a very good state, and that no miracle should be expected (I've understood this is compared to Downhill or The Lodger). A comment on this comment says that the only available prints for restoration are 16mm so...

However, I always take Amazon comments with a pinch of salt, even more when they say "VHS like PQ". It rarely is factual, and is unfortunately too often mis-used by talking with expectations not matching the reality of restoring very old movies.

I've read comments stating that The Wizard of Oz on BD looks like VHS. That gives you an idea...

OK, so DVD Classik posted their review and it seems the BD seems to be overkill visually speaking, with a poor definition.

Also, the movie is also fully silent.

I have it on order and will comment once viewed. It's from 16mm, so I don't expect miracles...but the public domain prints available are really horrible. It says it has a score, so we'll see.

Received Easy Virtue today. Very disappointed. There is no soundtrack at all. Just video and no audio.

The amazon.fr page says that the film was to be accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Nitin Sawhney and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. There is no soundtrack at all on this disc. Buyer beware.

The video is about what I'd expect. The only versions available to the BFI were poor 16mm reduction copies. It's been restored to 68 minutes.

Wow, that's really disappointing. Maybe they botched the authoring?

After viewing this I pretty much agree with the previous comments. Picture quality is poor, because of the 16mm source prints available. It is more stable and contrast is improved somewhat over previous DVD's. It has new titles (and forced French subtitles) and no soundtrack at all. There are scenes or bits missing here and there, so the running time is 67 minutes. Unless a better print or negative is discovered it's the best we have. If this was Hitchcock's lost second film The Mountain Eagle I'd be thrilled to have it at all, so I can't complain. My main complaints with this release are not including a musical score and the forced subtitles, both of which are inexcusable in this day and age. Hopefully, a better release will come eventually.

Is this the restored version from the "Hitchcock 9" project?

http://www.silentfilm.org/archive/easy-virtue

The article linked here confusingly says all the material the restores found totaled 69 mins, but then lists a running time of 82 mins at the bottom.

Spain the spanish blu-ray?

Has anyone seen the Spanish blu-ray of Easy Virtue? Are the subtitles also burned in and does it lack a score?

I also would be interested to hear if anyone has picked up the release from Spain.

And if anyone can recommend the (relatively) best DVD release of this title?

The Spanish BD is a BD-R, but has removable subtitles:

The restoration is "poor" because the only surviving prints are 16mm.

The sound is listed as "muet," which means "mute" in French. This is literally a silent film.
