Friend or Chingoo by Kwak Kyung-taek is my fave Korean movie.

I also really like 3-Iron by Kim Ki-duk.

My Dear Enemy featuring Secret Sunshine's Jeon Do-yeon is really charming.

Ryoo Seung-wan's output especially Crying Fist.

Daesepo Naughty Girls is hilarious.

The Good. The Bad. The Weird. (Korean version. The international cut is kaka.)

There's a Japanese movie by a Korean director named Hula Girls which is delightful.

Kim Ki-Duk's filmography is a brilliant, challenging mess.

Train to Busen is on Netflix right now. It's a must see. A few missteps but overall a great film.

Yes, THE HOUSEMAID (1960) is an excellent film noir available in the Scorsese World Cinema collection. A Korean student told me that the dialogue, however, had an odd archaic flavor that was harder to follow than modern Korean. (Of course it's an "old" movie.)

Haven't seen THE AIMLESS BULLET or THE EVIL STAIRS, but I'll also second films like POETRY, SECRET SUNSHINE, MOTHER, and I SAW THE DEVIL, and THE HOST, a definite variety of styles, stories, and themes.

Not sure if this is essential, but one of the best films I've seen this year is 'A Taxi Driver'. Top movie this year in South Korea and is 9th all-time (South Korea measures in admissions vs. gross).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6878038/

Hoping it'll have a blu-ray release.

Glad to see at least one country does it in a way that makes sense.
