How to hide cables from a wall mount?

Alright I finally got my new Plasma on a wall mount, and it is looking good. I got one question though, how to hide those cables going to the TV from the AV equipment?

Is there a tube or something you can buy to put the cables in? anyone got a link?

Out of curiosity: do you have any interest in fishing wires through the inside of the wall? If not, that link above is a good way to go.

My installer used 2 of these wallplates - one at the top behind the TV and one at the bottom where the cables come out.

2-gang recessed low-voltage cable wall plate

You have to also buy 2 of something like these:

Low voltage metal bracket

The above is an online supplier, but Home Depot has these in stock for even cheaper.

It's very easy to do. I watched him.

1. Trace an outline of the metal bracket on the wall where you want the new outlet to go
2. Score the outline in the drywall with a utility knife
3. Cut the scored line carefully with a tiny pointed drywall saw
4. Smooth off the edges with a file
5. Apply the metal bracket to the new opening and bend the tabs inward. Now the bracket is securely fixed in the opening.
6. Attach the wall plate with screws.

And voila! You have a brand new mounted wall plate.

One hint though - do not attach the 2-gang wall plate until after you feed the cables through. They're easier to slip through without the plate. Pull them through and then attach the wall plate.

The end result is a very neat and professional looking installation.

If it's your own house, and you can cut into the drywall this is the best way to go.

One other point - DO NOT run the TV power cord through this. That does not meet electrical construction code. LOW VOLTAGE LINES ONLY! (HDMI, RG-6, Component, RCA, Optical Audio, etc)

For power I had him wire a new surge-protected 1 outlet box directly behind the TV. Any electrician will do this for ~$75.

All cords hidden and looks really great!

That plate is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't want a hole in the wall and a regular decorator plate. This gives the function and look I need. They sell these at Home Depot??

The bracket is sold at Home Depot, I don't know about the plate. It may be sold at Home Depot.

Otherwise, get them at Monoprice. They're cheap.

Total cost is <$10 for 2 finished outlets.

I will probably order from them as long as shipping isn't too bad. I would only need one outlet/bracket. Can't put one behind the tv as the mount is there. Which is fine. I am going to do a small hole.

brettallica - Yeah that is George Brett. I collected all his stuff growing up.. favorite ballplayer.

robinandtami - thanks for the link, that is what I was looking for.

I do own my own house, but I really do not want to cut into drywall to run cables 4 feet or so. Plus I have an older house, and this is on a eterior wall.. so it may be a little more difficult with what is behind there, and I may not be in this house for more than 3 years..
