Got in the Schiit Loki this afternoon, really liking it with the SHP9500, HD700, and M1060. Doesn't do much good with the TH-X00PH, which is fine because they sound perfect as is with zero equalization. People aren't kidding, the SHP9500 does take equalization VERY well...probably the best of the 3, with the M1060 the HD700 following it fairly well. Jamming out with the SHP9500s right now and loving it.

You beat me to it.
Iím envious you got this as it me be one of my next purchases in the chain. But Iím unsure while using a tube amp. It seems that may defeat the purpose of
Tube rolling then.
Itís gotta be fun changing your SS to your preference.

At least I didn't have to spend any money other than shipping on it - it was offered as trade for my JAZZ-ff amp and I jumped on it. The guy actually bought it new specifically for the trade with my JAZZ-ff...so it technically is it a brand new unit. I know monetarily he got the better end of the deal ($400 amp for $150 tone box), but I had zero use for the amp since getting the Gustard H10 and virtually no interest from anyone for the JAZZ-ff for many months. Now the Schiit Bifrost DAC will be next up to go... really thinking of getting a Koss ESP950 (which I have heard before), and shelving the STAX SR-L700 purchase for a much later time.

That's what has me thinking about them... decent price and I'm always late on the good used STAX SR-L700 head-fi classified deals. If I pick up the ESP950 and then adapter cable for STAX PRO bias energizers and Woo WEE electrostatic amp adapter I will be ready for whenever I eventually do pick up an SR-L700.

Badas,
I checked out your gallery again and dude, that room is to kill for. I wish my house was conducive to have everything staged together. Hell my A/V gear, screen/projector is in my family room but have it set up as best as I can. Have motorized shades to darken the room at 2 in the afternoon, painted the ceiling a dark brownish/red, double filmed all the rest of the windows with room darkjening shdes (some with double shades) yadda, yadda yadda.
Have all my DVD's and games in bedroom and have to store all my Blu's (which are a lot) and all headgear in my man cave.
Gotta buy a new house to have a dedicated entertainment room.
I'd post pics but every time I try to, the file is too big and this site won't let me download them and it fails. Trying to figure it out.

Bro,
All you need now is a tube amp. I'm a believer. You can get a hybrid to start off with as I remember you saying you only like solid state. A hybrid can be pretty close if you were to buy.... say.... a Lyr2 like I have. You can run Lisst tubes which makes it a total SS amp. Then you can roll so many tube variants into this amp as it's endless. Then you can get that smooth, warm sound which would help so much with you HD700's, TH-X PH's and your Shure's.

But all this is written for not as you just set up and are into your current rig. Still something to think about for down the road. There are quite a few tube amps out there for 1/2 the price to get your feet wet, like the Schiit Vali 2, Little Dot and some Massdrop units.

Tube amp is something I plan on getting in the future, and will be this kit:

https://bottlehead.com/product/singl...tive-speakers/

Electrostatics take precedence over tube amp though... X20U + Schiit Loki + warm leaning modded Gustard H10 amp = VERY musical and lovely sound I can live with for a long time.

You don't have any electrostatics yet do you?

Thank you for the very nice comment.

I have been into HT since 1993. It takes time to get gear together. I recommend spending your $$'s on amps and speakers. That tech doesn't change. My Center speaker and one of my subs is from 1995 and there hasn't been any advancement. Video tech is advancing too quickly and when you spend big $$'s it is out of date the next year. Get together great amps and speakers. Then get a room. When you do that then get the best reasonable price display. That's my opinion.

I'm listening to this combo this morning.

Yggy DAC > Violectric V281 as a preamp > Woo WA22 > NightHawks.
Amazing combo. Just can't fault anything about the sound.

Yggy is super clean. Especially around the treble. It just doesn't spit. R2R chipsets just have treble nailed compared to Esabre chipsets.
I have read many comments from high end DAC manufacturers how they implement over sampling to Esabre chipsets to correct treble spitting. To me that is nutty. They use a flawed chipset and then try and fix it. R2R is a blessing. That's why manufacturers are moving to R2R. It is a leap forward. I can't wait until a few years from now the R2R chipsets filter into cheaper DAC's and more users get to experience them.

A fault I have noticed (plus other users) about Woo products is that the sound gets scratchy when the inputs are over blown (voltage). Woo really needs to improve its input circuits. I have heard the effect on my WA22 and worse on the more expensive WA5. A way to get around the fault is to stick the volume right up and pre-amp the input volume (voltage). Regulate it. Once you do that the input doesn't get overblown and the sound stays real clean. Hence using the Violectric as a pre-amp. A nice side effect to using the Violectric is I get remote controlled volume adjustment.

Then the Hawks main strength is that treble. I have never heard another HP that treats the treble the same way. Not elevated or extended. Just rendered as naturally as possible.

The end result is the cleanest possible signal with a touch of tube warmth and no elevated treble.
My end game. I could listen (and regularly do) to this all day.

Very cool. I looked at the Bottlehead for a long time at an exhausting level but couldn't find anyone who owned one to trade for some Canon lenses or astronomical equipment i was willing to part with. I found a Heads-fier who's into astronomy that traded me his like new LYR2 for one of my eyepieces. We both got great deals. To make a short story long, that would be a very cool amp to have. For me at the time, I couldn't pass up this deal as it was zero money out of pocket (at that time, more in a second) as I just don't look at the sky anymore like I did at one time.

But tube rolling? That's a whole different animal. I've spent close to a grand already on tubes and have enough tubes to last me, you and a few others a lifetime. It's an obsession and a LOT of fun changing all the sound signatures to match each HP I own. I'm done though as the only thing left are tubes that are $200-$300 a set and I'm just not going to do that and am happy with my $50-$100 tubes per set.

No, don't own any electrostatics yet but something that does interest me immensely. Like you, what I have now will have to suffice for the time being until I sell off some of my HP's I really don't use and settle in with my top 3-4 HP's I do use. I'm actually thinking about getting rid of the "OMG I can't do that" HD650's as they are not the SS I like or what I'm going after. Everyone looks at this HP as the standard against everything else. Maybe so, but I pretty much like everything else I own versus the 650's.

You are most welcome. That room is outstanding. It's so cozy and I would never leave the house...or should I say that room.
I agree with your take on speakers and amps. The speakers I'm running with are not as high end as yours but I've had them for at least 15+ years and see no reason to upgrade. They just sound so good. When I went comparison shopping for new speakers, for the money, I just couldn't find anything that sounded that much better where I'd get a R.O.I. for the upgrade. The only thing I would upgrade would be my center. That piece is just too important in the chain for HT that it should be the best sounding speaker IMO.

When I do decide to upgrade which won't be for quite a while, it will most definitely be a Yggy as I really like Schiit gear. Great stuff and affordable. You get a lot for what you pay for.

I'm still regretful that I traded away my Nightowls. When I got them, I believed they'd sound a lot like the Hawks but didn't, so I traded them. I'm always on the Head-fi classifieds looking for a used pair of Hawks that someone's would be willing to trade, but so far no takers.

Koover - I hear ya on needing to sell off some unneeded headphones and other items, only have 1 pair of ears, lol.

Badas - Have you had the chance to listen to any equipment using the AKM VERITA AK4490EQ DAC?? My TEAC NT 503 has dual chips, and with the iCan Pro, to my 50 year old ears, sounds incredible, detailed yet lush and very musical. Warmer than the Burr Brown DAC in the iFi stuff, but nearly as detailed and not dry and as clinical sounding, and none of the bite of the Sabre DAC in my OPPO. I still have yet to try an R2R DAC.

Vracer111 - Did you bite on that Massdrop deal?? How do electrostatics compare to say planar magnetic phones, like the LCD-3?? Or dynamic drivers? What's better/worse? I would LOVE to try some out, but no one anywhere near me carries them.

Yes, I did; saw the ESP950 was up to 40 out of 45 units , so went ahead with it after not finding any used deals - it sold out and drop closed very shortly afterwards. Planar Magnetics are slower and duller sounding compared to a STAX Lamda or even the ESP950. Electrostatics are the absolute transient speed/clarity kings from what I have listened to (STAX SR-L500, SR-007, and SR-009), unquestionably better than the HD800. The ESP950 is warmer and more rolled off than STAX Lamdas, but still extremely good in detail, speed, and clarity. And from what I've read/seen, the STAX SR-L700 can compare favorably to the Sennheiser Orpheus in sound experience for less than 1/50th the price.

Hi mate, No I haven't tried that DAC. Your description is what I would describe a R2R chipset as.
Tony my mate has a Pavane Metrum DAC with the 4 R2R chipset Mod. It uses 2 R2R chipsets per channel. That thing is crazy great. Costs more than my whole rig tho.
Yggy is just as good as the Pavane on smoothness. However the Pavane streaks ahead on soundstage and dynamics.
