For anyone in Melbourne: on the 16th of September the Astor Theatre is screening Road Games in 35mm. Tickets available here.

This is, presumably, the same print scanned for Umbrella's release so it would be interesting to get some feedback on how it compares in detail, sharpness, colour, and contrast.

Is this worth a blind buy? Given the high level of craft and restoration that has gone into this re-release of what many say is a classic Australian thriller, makes me super curious.

I think so but it's always tough recommending films to people you don't know. I wouldn't put this alongside the best thrillers I've seen but it's enjoyable and the extras are very good. Maybe wait 'til the price drops a touch if you're unsure.

Last night, I watched my region free Umbrella Blu-ray of Road Games.

Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis star in this Australian horror movie about a truck driver (Keach) who becomes suspicious of a mysterious motorist when news stories about a "Jack the Ripper" killer of women start to circulate on the radio. Jamie Lee Curtis stars as a beautiful hitchhiker who joins the driver on his search before the motorist catches on to them. This thriller has a few cool Hitchcock-esque curveballs to it that kept me engaged, and I also loved the offbeat vibe that this movie shares with many other Australian films. Think of a road trip version of Hitchcock's Rear Window, and you won't be too far off base.

I wasn't expecting miracles from the Blu-ray transfer, but the movie has a natural filmic look on the disc, and the audio is quite good. The extras are entertaining...and plentiful!

Pretty decent little film. Director Richard Franklin made movies that were better than you would expect, but they don't quite turn out great.

Road Games is another in a long list of Hitchcock inspired thrillers. It stands up well enough all these years later because it's low key and it does enough offbeat things to not be too formulaic. The performance is really good, and the dialogue is a tad more intelligent than what you get from a lot of the Hitchcock inspired movies over here. Anyone expecting a horror film or a gore fest will be letdown.

I think the thing that hurt the movie was that the villain wasn't all that threatening. The ending was also fairly lackluster. It just sort of lost steam at the very end.

Still, I'd give the movie a thumbs up... But I don't know how often I will re-watch it given the fact that it doesn't maintain its intensity all the way through.

[Show spoiler]The slow chase through the back alleys was novel I thought, and there is a moment of outright horror involving guitar string and a body part. Good movie!
