Default George Pal in general - and "The War of the Worlds" (1953) in particular!

Considering some of the absolute DREK that some of the studios are releasing on Blu-ray these days (that I am SURE that about THREE people actually want!), I am shocked and dismayed that only a couple of George Pal's films are currently available in the format.

For gosh sakes, Pal's films won MANY Academy Awards(!):

Destination Moon (1950) - Best Special Effects
When World Collide (1951) - Best Special Effects
The War of the Worlds (1953) - Best Special Effects
tom thumb (1958) - Best Special Effects
The Time Machine (1960) - Best Special Effects
The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962) - Best Costume Design
7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964) - Special Oscar to William Tuttle "for his outstanding make-up achievement"

Yet THE ONLY one of the listed films currently available on Blu-ray is "The Time Machine"!

Come on, guys! (Especially you, WARNER!) Get your heads out of your butts and release these greats on Blu-ray!

I would sell all your souls for a 4K three-strip restoration of War of the Worlds.

It does indeed count! I am 100% with this thread's originator regarding that great list of neglected classics. They deserve first rate Blu-ray release!

Couldn't agree more. War of the Worlds 1953 needs to be on BR. Destination Moon and Time Machine too.

War of the Worlds is probably at the top of my "'50s films I want on Blu-ray" list, now that Moby Dick is coming from Twilight Time. I want it so bad.

Agreed! I own the Time Machine Blu-ray, but have grabbed these others on used DVD over the years as I got tired of waiting for them to arrive in the superior format.

Destination Moon (1950)
When Worlds Collide (1951)
The War of the Worlds (1953)
Conquest of Space (1955)

Welcome to the forum! Pal's 1960 classic "The Time Machine" has been out on Blu-ray for a few years now, with a very nice presentation thanks to Warner Bros. Good to have another fan of the classics on board.

Oh, yeah - I got that right out of the gate. A little steep considering some of the material was in Standard Format - but worth it to have all the UCLA restorations in HD. Would LOVE to see the entire run of Puppetoons restored AND cleaned - but I know that's not in the cards...

When I was a kid, I didn't care about the wires. (I guess I was too terrified to notice 'em. )

But, as I've pointed out elsewhere, the most recent DVD release - AND the excellent iTunes HD release (worth a viewing if you haven't yet) - have used modern technology to accomplish an accuracy of registration of the three Technicolor strips not possible before. In most cases, this improved focus is an obvious benefit. But in circumstances like those in WOTW, the effects men RELIED upon the inaccuracy of three-strip Technicolor registration to hide suspension wires. Unfortunately, they did not foresee today's technology.

I'm for including BOTH an untouched and a "scrubbed" version on any Blu-ray of this film.

By the way - although Amazon does not seem to allow updating of "Listmania!" lists anymore, a few years back I created this one - of George Pal's films - which may be of interest to some:

I've been waiting on Shout! or Criterion to get their paws on War of the Worlds.

I don't even care if they remove the wires digitally, I just want the damn movie.

Time to dust off my double (ugh) DVD of War of the Worlds and When World Collide. Still waiting for Paramount Blu-rays. (I'd love a domestic Ipcress File as well.) Not holding breath.

Has anyone seen Amazon's HD stream of When Worlds Collide? I read about the iTunes HD release...I assume Amazon's would be the same version?

Haven't seen Amazon's, but I can't imagine that it would be any better than iTunes', which is indeed every bit as gorgeous as "Not on Blu-ray" says:

http://notonbluray.com/blog/when-wor...nes-hd-review/

BTW, in another couple of pieces of George Pal news, "Doc Savage The Man of Bronze" (1975) has also been released on Blu-ray. Like the Blu of "Houdini", it's only marginally better than Warner Archive's "pressed-on-order" DVD.

And I thought THIS would be of interest to Pal fans: looks like Arnold Leibovit - who gave us the documentary "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal" and "The Puppetoon Movie" - seems to be setting up a Kickstarter for a second volume of Puppetoon shorts:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...token=34855cd1

Like the first, it's going to be a bit pricey - but I'd willingly pay a bit of a premium for a chance to get more of these restored and made available!
