Hitch got a Memorial award from the Academy, but technically not an Oscar.

There are people on this forum that would do a far better job than the completely out of touch committee that hands out the Oscars. I trust someone like The Great Owl or some of these huge film buffs on these forums to give out much better advice than the kooks out at the academy.

It’s why I never watch the Oscars, and I never pay any attention to what they did or didn’t choose. I can find better informed sources in 30 seconds on the internet than their joke of a pageant.
Blu Rays I want.
1. Return to Snowy River
2. A Far Off Place
3. Quills
4. A New 4k remastered version of The Ninth Gate
5. 1990 Treasure Island with Charlton Heston

All have zero best director Oscars... Not to mention, pretty much every film I consider to be the greatest films of all time have no Best Picture wins... That is all anyone needs to know about the Academy lol

The Oscars are Hollywood politics. "Haven't seen this one, but I heard good things about it so I'm voting for it." "It's really X's turn to win, so I'm voting for that one".

Exactly, I mean most of the people voting do not even have time to watch movies, much less a majority of them.

I know some of the members in the academy have admitted to not even seeing Blade Runner 2049 due to it being so long and not having the time in their day.

I can’t believe they actually said that. I thought I loathed them before. I didn’t know it was possible to actually dislike them even more than I already did.

You don't have to look farther than the THR Oscar Ballots to see how little some of the voters care for the medium.

You can find multiple instances of Kevin Smith admitting on his podcast that he simply does not have the time to even think about watching Blade Runner 2049 and jokes about it quite frequently since it has been released. And naturally he just goes on and on about how he is gonna vote for Wonder Woman and Logan lol. It is a joke and there are many more like him that can not be bothered to sit down for three hours at a time.

The year Selma was nominated over 7 percent of the academy members admitted to not even watching the film at all, and that is just the ones that were polled and answered honestly.

Taking the Oscars completely off the table, for my money Here Comes Mr. Jordan is still the best film on that list of four.

I Married a Witch is a lot of fun but not as meaty or memorable as something like say Arsenic and Old Lace. But still, very glad I own it and I'll probably work it into many Octobers to come.

Only Angels Have Wings? I'm sure it's very good but I turned it off (amybe thirty, forty minutes in?) the first time I tried to watch it and have not yet felt compelled to give it another look.

His Girl Friday is pretty awesome. It has a lot going for it (including a great cast) but the dialogue is a particular standout. It's brilliantly written and even more brilliantly delivered. It's not just clever and witty, the pace and rhythm of the back-and-forth and overtalk are almost musical.

But Here Comes Mr. Jordan is just about perfect from top to bottom. I went into it expecting to like it but was really blown away not just by how good it is but by how consistently good it is. It's one of those rare films where I couldn't find anything to nitpick.
And I have been fortunate to escape what has been called “that form of snobbery which can accept the Literature of Entertainment in the Past, but only the Literature of the Enlightenment in the Present.” - Raymond Chandler

'Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whor*s all get respectable if they last long enough. - Noah Cross

Janus Films is releasing the 4K restoration of Olivier Assayas' film Cold Water. I'll assume Criterion will be releasing it sometime this year.
Speaking of Assayas, I just found out that he'll be at almost all of the films during a retrospective in Austin next month (coinciding with SXSW.) Looks like I'll have to take off work for this.

Really hope the flash sale is next week to take advantage of Silence of the Lambs(which I already pre-ordered on Amazon) but I want to get Sanjuro, Kagemusha, Elevator to the Gallows, and Day for Night. The wait is killing me
Always so many BluRays. Never enough money.

Movies that need a US BluRay release: Roman Holiday, The Lost Weekend, Ruggles of Red Gap, A Night at the Opera,The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The Naked City, Brute Force

I'm thinking about purchasing the three Ozu Eclipse sets, as well as Early Summer (DVD), Floating Weeds (DVD), and The Only Son/There Was a Father (DVD).

I ordinarily would have waited until the flash sale to buy both Silence of the Lambs and NOTLD. However, I couldn't pass up the $18.31 preorder prices I got for both on Amazon. There are 4 other fairly recent releases I'll grab during the flash sale, but this will be my smallest haul during one in years.
My 10 Most Wanted films on Region A Blu-ray: The Great Silence (Corbucci, 1968), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Peckinpah, 1973), The Bad News Bears (Ritchie, 1976), Black Sunday (Frankenheimer, 1977), After Hours (Scorsese, 1985), Bugsy (Levinson, 1991), A Bronx Tale (DeNiro, 1993), Strange Days (Bigelow, 1995), Bringing Out the Dead (Scorsese, 1999), Femme Fatale (De Palma, 2002).

I have bought Silence Of The Lambs so many times already that I can't decide if I want to buy it yet again. I also can't help but wonder if this title will get a 4K release.

A nice flash sale might persuade me to buy it for a 4th time.

Oh wow. This is great news. I've very much liked all Assayas films I've seen, and it's fantastic to hear that a previously unavailable film -- one which is apparently very respected -- will now be able to be seen.

Very excited!
"First, a brief preface. Every time I review a film by Jean-Luc Godard, I receive outraged letters from readers who hated it. It is suggested that my reviews and myself join Godard on the trash heap of history; that the customers wuz robbed. A common complaint is that Godard 'made no sense.' And so on." -- Roger Ebert (1966)

I really want to get the Ozu silent family comedies set as I love Tokyo Chorus and also the Silent Crime Dramas set. But both will likely have to wait a few months.

Yeah, I'll probably only get 3-4 films which two of them for certain will be the two Kurosawa films. Also if it comes down to 3 films it will likely be just Day for Night, but I will likely get Elevator to the Gallows also. Hope to have more money to work with for the B&N sale.

On the topic of pre orders, how does the shipping of pre orders on Amazon work for Criterions? Do we receive it the day it is released or does it ship to amazon day of, then to us?

The Late Ozu Eclipse, and Floating Weeds are my greatest blind-buys. Just incredible films, and they have great replay-value. Great commentaries for the FW set too, especially the Ebert one. Still need to get the Only Son set myself.

With Prime, I've generally got all of mine on release day. Without Prime, I've usually got them 2-3 days after release date.
