just saw some classicflix noir films this week. first time I have watch a BD from this company. What a fantastic job these folks are doing! Raw Deal had jaw-dropping PQ and decent supplements. They spent over 400 hours doing restoration on that movie, and every frame showed it! Wow, just wow! Can't wait to see T-Men and They Walked by Night! Highly recommended company and films!!

I hear that, I'm super thrilled about their work! I just don't get why they don't mention at the top of the blurb on the back cover what film elements were used for the transfer, 2K vs 4K. They should pat themselves on the back and let it be known what the source was because I, for one, always like know that. And these days I just think it's a marketing given.

Those are a nice trilogy of films. I'm still hanging onto my old DVDs for now, but if the PQ is that good, then I may go ahead & upgrade

That's terribly disappointing. Out of all the titles from the original announcement, this was the one that excited me the most.

Oh well. Better to know and no longer wonder.

BFI has some materials, but going that route is likely too costly. We may end up crowdfunding this one if we can get the support.
Thanks for your reply.
I would definitely support this for The Stand-In.

Glad you liked T-MEN. It is a true visual masterpiece and should be required viewing for every film class and for every film fan whether they like noir films or not.

And if you liked T-MEN, you'll equally love the other two.

Would love to do D.O.A., but finding good materials is the always the hurdle.

2K vs 4K scan can have very little relevance in the final bluray product based on a number of factors.

It is only a "marketing" thing.

I understand the sentiment as the average viewer would have a hard time telling the difference between a 2 & 4K scan, but it is not just a marketing ploy. You can actually get better image quality on Blu-ray with a 4K scan than with a 2K.

And while a 4K scan does improve the presentation, material used is always the greatest determining factor. And in the case of 5 STEPS TO DANGER, it's from an OCN and it's so sharp that some scenes look like they were filmed yesterday.

"Devil Thumbs a Ride" is a great cult noir film that is just crying out for a release.

You're absolutely right. I watched it a second time with the commentary track and I wasn't ever annoyed that the commentator was talking over the dialog. Mann and Alton do such a great job telling the story visually that the dialog is of secondary importance. Again, kudos on a great package for T-Men. You guys are setting the bar for these kind of small-label releases.

I'm aware that you can get better image quality, but it isn't a guarantee and this is what most people don't understand.

Example: a 2K scan with actual restoration work done can look much better than a 4K "raw" scan of a compromised source.

Only listing a 2K vs 4K scan only tells of the expense and time of the scan itself not the quality of the source or the actual work done post scan.

I'm a huge fan of the original "The Hills Have Eyes", but a 4K transfer taken from an old 16mm print didn't show much improvement, but on most 4K transfers you can notice a big improvement.

Why is there always a big sale on ClassixFlix Blu-rays when I'm broke?

As they are relatively shorter films, bit rate will be the same as on the special editions so PQ will be exactly the same.

We don't sacrifice quality regardless and we'll always encode at superior bit rates even if it means extra discs, but in this case it wasn't needed.

- David
Need one slight clarification here as I spoke prematurely regarding the encodes for the JOHN ALTON COLLECTION.

While the encodes for RAW DEAL and T-MEN will be the exact same as on the prior special editions, HE WALKED BY NIGHT will have a lower bit rate. It's going down to 23 which is higher than T-MEN and just below RAW DEAL. The original encode for HWBN was a lot higher as there was space left on the BD-25 for the overkill on rate.

I, along with a few industry pros, viewed the new encode to make sure it is up to ClassicFlix's high standards and that there is no detectable visible difference between the old and new encodes of HWBN. If there had been, we would have opted for a second disc. As it isn't the case, and the quality is just a superb as in the special edition, we're keeping it on one BD-50.
