Well the UK release is presented in the correct 1080i/50hz so that alone makes it superior to the slowed down US release IMO.

That's certainly a plus.

Is "The Future" series worth the time?

Looking at the specs of the US Special Edition, it seems it was presented in 1080i, and the standard edition was 1080p. So is the presentation on the US "Special Edition" not the same as the UK "Special Edition"?

Only just remembered the disc issue. Anyone know if my batch is affected or not?

Disc 2
A0101654470-A923 1000
A0101654470-B923 1000

Disc 3
A0101654471-A933 1000
A0101654471-B933 1000

Edit: just saw the last page where trondmm had the same numbers as me that are considered faulty. Hope they'll still replace them!

I'm guessing mine are good. In case this helps anyone, if you have a Blu-ray drive, you can put the disc into your computer and see how the files on the discs are dated:

Disc 1 - PLANET_EARTH_SE_D1: 2010-09-02
Disc 2 - PLANET_EARTH_SE_D2: 2011-01-19 - 4 months later = fixed
Disc 3 - PLANET_EARTH_SE_D3: 2011-01-13 - 4 months later = fixed
Disc 4 - PLANET_EARTH_SE_D4: 2010-09-03
Disc 5 - PLANET_EARTH_SE_D5: 2010-09-02
Disc 6 - BBCDVD3272: 2010-07-05 (Bonus DVD)

(Always import the original UK BBC Blu-rays instead of the US releases (Planet Earth etc, Red Dwarf, Outcasts, etc). Even though they call it 1080i (for 50Hz or whatever), the native video stream as encoded on the disc is actually 1080p 25fps original framerate.)

For anyone who needs their discs replaced, the scheme is still running.

You need to contact:

DVDSupport@bbc.com

They're very kindly sending me out disc 2 & 3 replacements. I couldn't remember where I'd bought the set from. Turns out it was used from a seller on eBay, so I was pleasantly surprised they honoured it!

Came across this thread by chance, and had no idea there were disc issues. Just checked mine: faulty. Glad to hear the scheme is still running, bit of a surprise that.

So, the B listings are the new ones?
What is the issue, what should I watch for/fear? Way back when I watched Disc one ... but since then I've been buried in work and loads of new BDs and haven't gotten back to continue (I've been waiting to carve out a week-or-two in order to watch the entire set uninterrupted but ... ).

EDIT: I just checked the disc dates, as suggested by Brandon K, but got different results - in fact, different results for each disc, except discs 2 &3 (dates are for the 3 listed folders on each disc):
Disc 1 [6-13-2011]
Discs 2-3 [6-17-2011]
Disc 4 [6-21-2011]
Disc 5 [6-24-2011]
Disc 6 [6-29-2011]
You can only have too much ammo if you're on fire or swimming.

Digital Copies Available. PM Me For A List.

No, both numbers in your quoted post are on the discs, as an outer and inner number. Discs 2 & 3 only need checking.

Otherwise, I double checked by skimming through the Ice Worlds episode on Disc 2. It should be clear in the whitest scenes that something is wrong. E.g. Snow/Ice is blown out with loss of detail (see comparison posts earlier in the thread).

I've emailed the BBC and I assume will receive a reply after the weekend.

After about a month, surprised to see that the BBC didnít just replace the faulty discs, but sent me a brand new box set. Great outcome.
