Saw it theatrically, of course, along with all the other Marvel fanatics, but I always preferred Louis Lettier's Incredible Hulk better; Ang Lee just ruined it, IMO, with the comic book-esque boxes constantly interrupting the action, and I thought the whole Nick Nolte/Bruce's father angle should have been scrapped (that end sequence when he's attempting to enrage Bruce, played by Eric Bana in this one, to "steal" the "power" from him was ridiculous, again IMO).

Now, I will say I thought Sam Elliott was a better Ross than William Hurt (he just looked like he stepped off the pages of the comic compared to Hurt), though I am torn about who played a better Betty, Connolley or Tyler, and I actually preferred Ed Norton's performance as Banner better than Bana's (to me, Norton played a good "hybrid" of the TV show Banner and a motion picture variant of the character, which I believe is what Lettier was going for, as evidenced by the "Bruce in the radiation chair" sequences in the beginning of Incredible Hulk, plus the nod to Lou Ferrigno later on and the TV show piano theme played when Bruce first Hulks out and is in need of pants).

Also, Lettier's film allowed us to see, for the first time on the big screen, an actual genuine adversary for the big green guy in Abomination; that fight scene towards the end between the two genetically-altered creatures, while a bit "loose" with the CGI in certain places, was exciting for a comic adaptation, though I didn't agree with some of the decisions with regard to having them "talk" to each other (Abomination's voice didn't sound anything as you would expect from the altered Bronsky, and all of a sudden he named him "Hulk" before they fight? And then Hulk KNOWS to answer to this later on, taking the opportunity to roar "HULK....SMASHHHHHH!!!!"? I didn't buy it).

Forget The Evil Dead; what George Lucas has done to Star Wars since 1997 is truly "The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror".

I totally have The Hitcher (TERRIBLE transfer; this needs a remaster or a 1080p upgrade, seriously...would be great if Scream got their hands on this and remastered it, but not likely because this is an HBO/TriStar property) in that snapper case version, too, as well as Return of the Living Dead (kinda dated video master and flat mono audio that needs a remix).

I haven't seen The Hitcher since I rented it on vhs in the 90s, so I kind of forget. I just knew that the dvd was long oop, and that it wasn't on blu. Return of the Living Dead has a blu release though. I believe Scream Factory did it in the last few years. Summer School (a childhood fav) and sadly True Lies are still sans blu as well though.

Anyway, a local shop had a 50% off sale on DVDs, so these cost me between $1 and $2.50 a piece. These were all of interest to me, and at that price I can't complain. And at the very least, other than True Lies, they're all anamorphic widescreen, so that's good.

Yeah, Hitcher has long been out of print (the TriStar/HBO DVD) and it's on/in no other disc-based format (well, at least in the Region 1/A sector, as far as I know); an indie house like Shout/Scream needs to buy this property and do a proper 2K or 4K scan and give it a proper special edition treatment. It really is due already to the myriad of fans out there, like us. This will likely never happen in our lifetimes, however, if at all. I remember watching it when it first debuted on HBO (I must be a little older than you) and immediately being smitten with it; it's one of Rutger Hauer's best performances (next to Nighthawks) and one of the most underrated thrillers of all time. The remake with Sean Bean was an absolute joke in retrospect.

The video transfer on this disc -- along with the almost useless, rather anemic Dolby Digital 5.1 "surround" track (which is anything but) -- is atrocious, and includes a moment that looks like the scene was being watched from behind a dirty screen door. I refer to the moment when Halsey (C. Thomas Howell's character) arrives at that dusty auto shop-type dump off the highway, looking for a phone to use...this sequence, especially when he picks up the useless pay phone, is drenched in a noisy, nasty-looking abnormality that looks like a cross between a snowy over-the-air channel broadcast and a shitty VHS copy being played at low speed. Then, there's the aforementioned "screen door" effect that plagues the scene at one point; it's difficult to describe, but it's awful...and I'm using an excellent upscaling player for DVDs (Oppo's BDP-83 Blu-ray player with the Anchor Bay VRS chipset).

And, yes, I'm aware of Return of the Living Dead's various incarnations on Blu; it actually has received many "special edition"-esque treatments even on DVD since the launch of the MGM disc you and I have, and I know Scream/Shout got their hands on it to do a Blu-ray. This film, an absolute classic in the horror comedy sub-genre and one I watch every Halloween season, has had a rocky ride on home video, what with all the rights battles for the soundtrack usage (not sure if you were aware of them) including the fight to use varying versions of "Burn the Flames" at the end when James Karen's character sticks himself in the ole oven...

At any rate, as you said, yeah, at least they're anamorphic...

I bought Still Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack

Looked pretty good considering how old it was. Plus it was only $6.00 on Amazon.
Happiness is not having to set the alarm for the next day.
