Same here.
"First, a brief preface. Every time I review a film by Jean-Luc Godard, I receive outraged letters from readers who hated it. It is suggested that my reviews and myself join Godard on the trash heap of history; that the customers wuz robbed. A common complaint is that Godard 'made no sense.' And so on." -- Roger Ebert (1966)

Default 45 Years

I watched 45 Years on Netflix last night and while it is slow moving, it does tell a strong story about choices we make in relationships and the opportunities that passed us by. Chock full of symbolism and keen insight on the psyches of both the male and female protagonists. Well acted, too.

I enjoyed it. I think my opinion would fall in the minority, but I think it is one of the stronger modern films that Criterion has chose to release. I liked it better than the recent Assayas films, better than Phoenix, and better than the parts of Certain Woman that I did see.

I wish they would do Hatari!. One of my favorite Hawks films as a kid and the transfer out right now is beyond atrocious.
Blu Rays I want.
1. Return to Snowy River
2. A Far Off Place
3. Quills
4. A New 4k remastered version of The Ninth Gate
5. 1990 Treasure Island with Charlton Heston

If my sacrifice will yield another Blu-ray release for arguably the greatest filmmaker of all-time, I am more than happy to oblige.

Truly shocking that Floating Weeds does not have a proper US release, at least to my knowledge it does not...

It's my most wished for title. The UK release doesn't do the film justice sadly.

The review for The Passion of Joan of Arc should be live in the next few hours. Stay tuned.

In the Criterion newsletter I just received, they mention that The Great Escape is now on their channel along with some of the extras from the 1993 laserdisc edition. I wonder if this means that we might see a Criterion blu-ray release of this movie soon?

"The Great Escape
With a powerful ensemble that includes Steve McQueen and James Garner, John Sturges’s classic adventure film comes to the Channel in our long-unavailable 1993 laserdisc edition. Among the special features: a commentary with Sturges and members of his crew."

I'm still hoping we see Frank Capra's 'Meet John Doe' get the Criterion treatment. It's a nice counterbalance to 'It's a Wonderful Life' and Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck are sensational. As it's been in the public domain for many years, all that's out there is iffy at best.

Default Is Criterion Releasing Some Of The Warner Titles ?

Hello All !!

I have a question, and I apologize if this has been addressed previously.

I was wondering if Criterion is releasing any of Warner Brothers' titles on Blu ?

The reason I even gave this a thought is because someone on the Warner thread said that Criterion had been (or is) releasing some of Warner's titles.

One title in particular, The Heart is Lonely Hunter, is a Warner title I have been waiting to be released on Blu for ages, and even though I keep abreast of all of Warner's releases, I was just wondering if a film like this might possibly be released by Criterion ?

Any help would be appreciated !!

They've released a bunch of Warner titles to date. "The Heart..." would surely fit in as a Criterion release, but if it does get a BD, I feel it's more likely to come from Warner Archive, who put it out on DVD. With this being the 50th anniversary of the film, hopefully it does come out this year

Yes, I also agree that The Heart is a Lonely Hunter would be right up Criterion's alley...Yet I also agree with you that it's a stronger bet that it gets a release from Warner Archive...I didn't even think about this being the 50th anniversary of the film!!...Thanks so much for your input !!

While it's in the public domain, WB would be the ultimate rights holder. All the original elements like the camera negative are at UCLA.
