Actually, I believe the information I posted is the DSP and not the main. It looks like there's a 1.08 out there and I think I may need to do it to correct the DTS bomb. Not sure though.

Ok, now I'm straight. I'm on 1.06 main, and there is a 1.08 out there, but you have to use the special port on the back and an adapter. It corrects the audio delay when switching sources (I never thought it was that bad) and also corrects the lip-sync issues (which I personally can't detect).

The DSP firmware you can do via the PS3 and burning a disc. It corrects the DTS bomb. It also resets your Audyssey settings, so I'm going to wait until I have time to correct both before trying it. However, I will do it as I may go to a standalone player in the future. I'll update if I do it.

Heh, a bit off-topic, but I am SO wanting that new Oppo player. I think my money could be better spent on a new set though.

Oh, and I'll be doing the DSP updates soon. I just need to have some time where I can run Audyssey without interruption.

Ohhh, is that what the firmware update is for? I hate how it takes so long for the audio to sync up. Is it worth going through all that trouble to attempt an update? I was reading that it required certain programs plus a serial cable (but you can use a USB to Serial if need be). I think I'll be safe and just do the DSP updates. Last year when I attempted to do the updates, my Onkyo wouldn't read any update coming in. I think it's because I used the PS3 and it altered the file. I'm going to try using an old Sony DVD player I have.

Updates and Audyssey!! What madness in this thread!

As for Audyssey..hmmm not for me anymore guys

Over the weekend I spent a good two hours with my SPL meter and frequency test tones. The result is a flat frequency curve (+/-2db) using the 7band eq in the 805 with CORRECT bass management. It completely eliminated the bottoming out I would get in my sub at reference while using Audyssey. What I'm most impressed about in doing my own frequency curve is the compromise between 'Direct and the Audyssey settings'. It's just the best of both worlds. It was a complete learning experience, but a fun one at that.

Howdy...

I have an 805 running with a PS3 and have a few nooby questions i am hoping someone can help me with...

For watching BR's the set up is great...everything works a charm.
But i've started to use my PS3 more and more for music lately and so things change.

I like the sound Pure Audio gives when listening to CD's. But i notice the sub is left out of the equation. Does this mean all the low end is not going to be heard, or is everything sent to the fronts?.

Also, i have a HDD running to the PS3, so i can listen to mp3's and AAC music files. Is there any settings that should be changed to get the most out of these?

And finally...i ordered an SACD just to see what the fuss was about. Im still a bit confused about DSD, PCM etc. What is the correct setup on the 805 to hear the SACD as it should be played?

Thanks for any help

I think it is worth doing, I used a serial cable and my laptop.
The improvement is rather noticeable after the upgrade.

I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to when I have the time. Yes, the "main" uses a serial cable, and the "dsp" uses a burned disc. You should be able to use your PS3- just make sure to set the output to 44.1 rather than 48 in the audio setup and you have to connect it via optical.

Can you maybe write up or point me to a how to on this including a good place to get tones? I'm interested in getting more use out of my SPL.

Beerman...
SACD- depends on the player and if it can output DSD via HDMI. Might want to ask in the SACD thread, but I don't think there's much you have to do on your Onkyo- most of the work is getting the sound to the receiver via the player.

As far as music, it depends on what your crossover is set at and how you're listening. In 2-channel, only the sounds below the crossover setting are going to go to the sub. There's no "dedicated" LFE here. Keep in mind that in Pure Audio it takes your Audyssey settings out, so crossovers would be null in that respect.

*edit* Missed the Pure Audio- see below.

Beerman...
When using either "Pure Audio" or "Direct Audio" the bass management system, and all post-decoding digital processing for that matter, is turned-off. Therefore, your subwoofer will be napping whenever you use this mode with any audio material that does not have an LFE track. Unless you have very good speakers you should not use either of these modes.

I always listen to Pure Audio when listening to SACD or DVD-Audio. My kids when they first listened to it thought that the voice and band are coming from a live recording stage.

Thanks for the replies lads.

I'm using JBL's E80's as fronts...they seem to handle anything thrown at them which is great.

I'm looking forward to hearing this SACD...i hope i'm not expecting to much!!

Another point about using Pure or Direct Audio, the Audyssey System is also bypassed. So if your room's frequency response is corrected by Audyssey your system will sound different when using the Pure/Direct Modes. I still have not figured-out why people think their system sounds better with all the audio processing defeated, then want it all on when they watch movies.

Agreed. I never use Direct or Pure Audio for that reason, personally. I will use Stereo when listening to 2-channel music, though.

same here, for as long as I have everything in the room that it is in and not in a dedicated listening room with lots of acoustic treatment I leave audesy on, It makes a very noticeable difference.

Still haven't gotten around to updating the DSP firmware, though I do plan on it- the disc is burned and two of the three DSP's are running on older firmware versions.

Angry Video output issue in 875

I recently (Feb-09) bought the 875 (European Model). I have a PS3 (HDMI), HD-DVD (HDMI), Wii (Component), Set-top Box (S-Video) connected to it.

Output is through HDMI to a Panasonic 1080P Monitor.

Was working fine as of 3 days ago when Video output from Onkyo to Plasma started showing distorted images (jagged lines). This happens with any of the above inputs.

I have tried to reproduce it and the pattern is the same. From a cold start the 875 displays the video just fine on the monitor but after about 20-30 mins of playing time once the 875 has heated up enough the video freezes up although audio continues to pass through.

There is no problem with the monitor because direct connections from various components to the monitor work just fine.

Has anyone faced a similar issue if so what are the measures I can take to alleviate this.

The lip sync issue was most commonly reported on television broadcasts which can be all over the map regarding sync. I have all HDMI 1.3 devices, so I can take advantage of the HDMI LipSync feature, but really all that is doing is reading the EDID data regarding video processing time and applying the appropriate audio delay so this really is doing nothing magical.

I think the lip sync may be more related to certain equipment combinations and/or badly synched broadcasts.

I have the DVE BD test/calibration disk and I can't see any significant audio when viewing the AV-sync sweep with 1080p or 720p content. You would think it would be very noticeable when jacking up the delay to the max and even then audio click occurs about where you would expect with that amount of delay. Personally I think the issue was blown out of proportion. Not saying no one ever experienced it, but again the only time it has ever really stuck out to me was while watching certain channels that also had visibly bad sync with other TVs/cable box combinations in my home. Also, it would not surprise if some of the so called issues were being scrutinized by fanboys of other manufacturers.

Fact is that all the DSP processing in these modern AVRs does not come for free and signal latency can become an issue, but hopefully in most cases the video signal takes longer to process so a simple audio delay can fix the issue.
4k... really? Can't we just be happy with BD for a while.

You only need to update the DSPs to correct 'BOMB' issue.

FW 1.08 mainly addresses audio signal lock delays.... NOT the supposed lip-sync delay.

I have an original build 805 purchased in June 2007 that came with loader 1.00 and FW 1.01. I needed to acquire a dongle and update files, but I successfully upgraded my unit to the latest loader 1.01 and FW 1.08. Now that I have loader 1.01 I don't need the dongle any more.

If someone wants the dongle and CD for $15, PM me with your info and I will send you my personal info where to send the check. BUT I take no responsibility if you toast your unit, but I never heard of someone completely bricking their unit.

If you do the FW 1.08 update I believe it updates your DSPs at the same time.

Again you only need the dongle if you have a 805 with loader 1.00 which was on all units until FW 1.05 I believe.
4k... really? Can't we just be happy with BD for a while.
