The 4010 sounds like a nice replacement for the 3800. I wish I had a Denon receiver that could take advantage of DenonLink4.

Haven't used my PS3 for Blu-ray in quite some time. All it does is Beatles RockBand these days...

Mine usually sees Dirt 2 or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Could someone tell me if standalone players like the Panasonic BD80 usually have better PQ and AQ than the PS3 itself? I want to get a standalone player and switch the PS3 to gaming only.

There's really no difference in video quality between any BD players, whether they be the $98 Magnavox or the $500 Oppo.

Separation of poor, good, and excellent BD players for video will be more or less determined by DVD playback. Easiest to differentiate would be deinterlacing quality (by using reference discs and synthetic tests found in discs like Spears and Munsil or DVE: HD Basics). Players with the Reon chip have been known to exhibit colorspace errors when outputting over YCbCr but not with RGB. Little stuff like that requires a lot of research...or a lot of asking. If you don't care about DVD playback on your BD player, then you are more or less correct that BD players perform very similarly across the board under 1080p/24. However, if you are a picky movie watcher that prefers to use tools like DNR, edge enhancement, etc. for BD playback, then you will want something more powerful (ie. Realta). Players with the Reon chip can't do noise reduction for HD.

It's DVD upconversion where the PS3 fails when compared to SA players. As for the Cnet review, they must of tested on a 20" screen if they believe the PS3 DVD upconversion is anything close to the OPPO. Also keep in mind that most people are using their player for blu-ray placback and the gaming capability of the PS3 is not a blu-ray feature. A SA player also will cost $100-200 less than the PS3 with identical blu-ray PQ playback and better DVD upconversion. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I rarely watch DVDs anyway so the upscaling does not matter to me at all. I was only deciding if I should spend $300 on a PS3 Slim or a Panasonic BD60 or BD80 for around $150. I read somewhere that the standalone players have better PQ than the PS3 so I thought I might as well save myself some $$ and get the Pannny since I only care about PQ.

I just found this forum so I'm a total noob. Just used my 2 year old PS3 60GB to play a Blu-Ray for the first time yesterday and plan on buying and renting more in the future. My concern is wearing out the lens. I play games on the unit a fair amount. Would it make sense to buy a cheap player for movies and give the game machine a break and use it just for games?

Also, I'm pretty sure talk of illegal downloads is not allowed here. Either way, most here don't approve and will probably respond accordingly. I would, but you're new here, so I'll be nice. Welcome to the forum though. |
