Im confused about this wondering what youre actually getting if you send a dts master hd or dolby true HD track to a reciever that dosent decode it but accepts Multi Channel Linear PCM over hdmi.If its sending it as lpcm instead of the hd codecs do you get a different bit rate .Is it still dolby true HD if its being sent this way and no difference if you were decoding in the reciever.PCM tracks take up more space than the new codecs so how can they suddenly turn into lpcm.

The PS3 internally decodes Dolby True HD and DTS HS MA and sends them to the reciever as LPCM. Thus, as long as the receiver accepts LPCM, it does not need to decode the lossless formats since the PS3 did it already.

Well people say theyre exactly the same but they have different bitrates. Are you just getting the same bitrate then as you would if the reciever was decoding it.Is it still a dolby hd and dts hd track underneath with the same bitrates but ps3 is telling the reciever its pcm so it accepts it.If its correct then i understand if its not i'll have to switch my brain off before it explodes lol

so of course you can se bitrates, but output is pcm. and no it's not dolby true hd or dts hd ma underneath, they are DECODED internaly. I hope its more clear. Marek |

If you have a slim PS3, you can go into the audio options and change the settings to that Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA are output 'as is' and not automatically converted to LPCM, if you prefer that.
However, with an original PS3 (phat), you can't change that option, only the slim version can.

Indeed, that's correct. I forgot to mention that.
